SCHS girls win
SB boys trip Stallions in double-overtime By DAN BISER VINEGAR HILL - If it weren’t for tough luck, the South Columbus Stallions would probably have no luck at all when it comes to basketball in the Waccamaw 1A-2A Conference this season. On Friday, the Stallions suffered their second double-overtime loss to this season in a 58-56 decision against the visiting South Brunswick Cougars. In grueling, physical game, South Brunswick managed to pull out the win and up its conference record to 6-3. South Columbus, which suffered from several lapses of poor shooting from the field and foul line, saw its league record drop to 1-9. “It seems to turn out the same way every time,” said Stallion coach Nathan Faulk, whose Stallions dropped a double-overtime loss to Trask last month and has suffered several other conference losses by five points or less. “We play hard all the way, but can’t seem to get it to come out right at the end.” South Columbus rallied from an eight-point deficit late in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 45 and send it into overtime. The first overtime period ended in a 51-all deadlock. Derrick Clay scored a game-high 23 points for the Stallions and Bryant Edwards had 11. Joey Hines led South Brunswick with 15 pints, followed by Ervin Hall with 12 and Ryan Waldrep with 10. In the girls game, South Columbus made amends for an earlier season loss by defeating the Lady Cougars 50-41. Amanda Dowe scored 19 points, including nine in the final quarter, to lead SCHS scorers. Yolanda McCoy tallied 12 points for the Lady Stallions, who put their conference record at 3-7. Coach Brett Burroughs’ South Columbus team led from the outset, holding a 22-19 halftime lead and gaining a 37-28 edge after three quarters. Kat Adams paced South Brunswick scorers with 11 points as the Lady Cougars saw their conference record slip to 5-4. South Columbus will entertain Trask on Tuesday before closing regular-season play on Friday at Whiteville. GIRLS GAME
