Former DSS Director Wright dies

Alice Shelley Wright, one of Tabor City’s most beloved residents who served as director of the Columbus County Department of Social Services for many years, died at home Wednesday morning.

She graduated from Tabor City High School, Meredith College and attended the School of Social Work at UNC-Chapel Hill.

She married Willard Wright, who had grown up in the same block, and they observed their 65th wedding anniversary on Nov. 8.

Wright worked for New Hanover County’s Child Protective Services for five years and the Columbus County Department of Social Services for more than 30 years, serving as director 27 years.

The American Business Women’s Association recognized her as “Boss of the Year” four years before she retired in 1976.

A member of the Tabor City Baptist Church for 77 years, she held many leadership positions in the church and was honored as a lifetime member in 2005.

Funeral services will be held at the church on Friday at 3 p.m. with visitation at the church from 1 to 3 p.m. (See obituary on page 12-A of our printed edition.)
