OBITUARIES

HAZEL STRICKLAND GRAINGER

TABOR CITY -- Hazel Strickland Grainger, 75, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2007, after a long illness. She was born May 25, 1931, the daughter of the late Wade and Ilee Strickland.

Grainger grew up and lived her entire working life in Tabor City. As owner of the local restaurant Granny’s Kitchen for more than 30 years, she became simply known as “Granny” to the many who knew and loved her.

Along with her business partner, Smithy Jones, she built a thriving business that has become a vital part of the community, providing good food and serving as a gathering place for locals. She will be remembered for her hard work and lifelong dedication to the Tabor City community.

Final rites will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 8, at Inman Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the Forest Lawn Cemetery, Tabor City. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include her husband, Billy Grainger; a daughter, Sheryl Dameron and husband David; a son, Richard Grainger; a sister, Clovie Ward; seven grandchildren, Kim Gore, Barret Strickland, Tara Todd, Stephanie Ellis, Neal Grainger, and Morgan Dameron, Michael Dameron; and five great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Terry Wayne Strickland.

MARCELLAS SMITH JR.

HALLSBORO -- Marcellas Smith Jr., 75, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2007, at his residence. He was a farmer and a veteran of the United States Army.

Final rites will be held at noon Saturday, Feb. 10, at Mt. Hebron AME Zion Church. Burial will follow in the Hallsboro Memorial Park. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include an adopted daughter, Alice Smith of the home; three sisters, Margaret Ford of Garland, Lillie J. Powell and Melvina Boone, both of Hallsboro; two brothers, Edward Allen Smith of Southern Pines and Willie J. Smith, both of Garland.

Viewing will be at the funeral home on Friday, Feb. 9 from noon until 7 p.m. Viewing will be at the church Saturday from 11 a.m. until noon and again following the service.

EDWARD LEE GILES

TABOR CITY -- Edward Lee Giles, 64, of the Dothan community, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2007.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, at Westside Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Betty Strickland officiating. Burial will follow in the Bristol Creek Cemetery in Dothan. Westside Funeral Home of Tabor City is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his mother, Cornelia Giles of the home; five sisters, Bertha Watson of Hampton, Va., Vernell Jordan of Dothan, Diane Giles of the home, Gloria Giles of Philadelphia, Pa., and Naomi Conyers of Iron Hill; two brothers, Bennie Lee Giles of the home, and William Troy Giles of Iron Hill.

Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9 at the funeral home.

ALICE LOU SHELLEY WRIGHT

TABOR CITY -- Alice Lou Shelley Wright, 89, died at her home on Live Oak Street, Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2007 after a short period of declining health. Wright was born on Oct. 6, 1917 in Tabor City. She was the only daughter of William H. Shelley Sr. and Ora Blanche Spivey Shelley.

Wright graduated from Tabor City High School in 1935 and graduated from Meredith College in 1939. She also attended the School of Social Work at UNC-Chapel Hill in 1940. In 1941, she began working for Columbus County Welfare Department (Social Services now).

She married Willard C. Wright on Nov. 8, 1941. She worked from 1941 until 1946 for New Hanover County’s Protective Services for Children. Upon returning to Columbus County in 1946, she began working for Columbus County Department of Social Services. In 1949, she was named director of the department and served in that capacity until her retirement in 1976 with 35 years of total service. Four years before she retired, the American Business Women’s Association recognized her as “Boss of the Year.” Wright was appointed by Governor James G. Martin as a trustee for Southeastern Community College for the term 1991-1995.

Wright was a member of the Tabor City Baptist Church for 77 years. She served as an assistant Sunday school teacher, WMU Director and served four terms on the Deacon Board. She was honored as a Life Time Deacon in 2005 for her faithful service. She took great pleasure in serving on the Benevolent Committee that often helped the poor and needy. She was devoted to her church and was an active participate in all of its activities.

Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9, at Tabor City Baptist Church on Live Oak Street. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church on Friday, Feb. 9 from 1-3 p.m. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City is handling the arrangements.

Her husband, Willard, survives Mrs. Wright; they were married for 65 years. She is also survived by three sons, Henry N. Wright and wife, Joyce of Smithfield, Russell D. Wright and wife, Jamie and Alan S. Wright and wife, Roxanne, all of Tabor City; six grandchldren, Mark Alan Wright, Jacob Wright, Wendy Wright Hilburn, Kelli C. Wright, Tim Parrish, and Shelley W. Gardner.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Tabor City Baptist Church Building Fund, 200 Live Oak St., Tabor City, N.C. 28463.

MOTHER EUNICE BLANKS WHITE WOOTEN

WHITEVILLE -- Mother Eunice Blanks White Wooten, 95, died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2007, at Premier Living. She was a homemaker.

Final rites were held Monday, Feb. 5, at Christian Plain AME Zion Church with the Rev. Kenneth Waddell officiating. Burial followed in the Mitchell Field Cemetery. Union Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.

Survivors include two sons, Henry L. White of Whiteville, and Thomas White of Florida; three daughters, Martha Smith of New York, Lorine Henry of Maryland, and Bertha Smith of Whiteville.

HUBERT EDWARD WARD

OCEAN ISLE – Hubert Edward Ward, 72, died at home Friday, Feb. 2, 2007. He was the son of the late Golia and Walter Ward of Nakina.

He served in the United States Army for 30 years.

A private memorial service will be held.

Survivors include a son, Mark Ward of Cleveland, Ohio; a daughter, Cheryl of Tennessee; a brother, Jim Ward of Metairie, La.; four sisters, Mary Meares and husband Earl of Whiteville, Pauline Gibson of Charlotte, Wilma Duncan and husband Arthur of Clarendon, and Linda Temple and husband Wayne of Raleigh; and five grandchildren.

L.D. ANDERSON

BLADENBORO -- L.D. Anderson, 80, died Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2007, at his residence. He was a veteran of the United States Army.

Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10 at the Bladenboro Church of God with the Reverends Kenneth Smith and Bobby Winebarger Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at the Lewis Cemetery. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include a son, Larry Anderson of the home; two stepsons, Jimmy Byrd of Ocean Isle Beach, and Robert Byrd of Dublin; two stepdaughters, Barbara Byrd of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Sandra Byrd of White Lake; two sisters, Juanita Baker of Wilmington, and Doris Hayes of Leland; eight grandchildren, and a great-grandchild.

Visitation will be held Friday, Feb. 9 from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

LUCILLE BISHOP BAUM

WHITEVILLE -- Lucille B. Baum, 100, formerly of Savannah, Ga., died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2007, at Shoreland Healthcare & Retirement Center. She was the daughter of the late L.B. and Bessie Bishop of Savannah, Ga., and the widow of Bartola Baum. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Helen Baum Brown of Whiteville.

Baum was a lifetime member of the Eastern Star of Savannah and a member of Faith Primitive Baptist Church in Savannah.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 8, at Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah, Ga. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include three grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren.

POLLY SCOGGINS ELLIS COX

HAMLET -- Polly Scoggins Ellis Cox, 86, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2007, at her residence. She was born on Sept. 19, 1920 in Clarke County, Athens, Ga. She was the daughter of the late Benjamin Scoggins and Mattie Chambers Scoggins.

Cox was a member of God of Prophecy Church of Rockingham. She was a homemaker and loved to work in her yard and also help take care of older folk.

Final rites were held Thursday, Feb. 8, at Harrington Funeral Home in Hamlet. Burial followed in Corinth Baptist Church Cemetery in Chadbourn. Harrington Funeral Home of Hamlet handled the arrangements.

Survivors include two daughters, Mattie Ellis Gordon and husband Jessie of the home and Jimmie Ellis Jernigan of Hamlet; five grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren, and four nieces.

TABOR CITY -- Nathaniel Bradley, 88, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare.

Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9, at First Baptist Church of Tabor City. Burial will follow in the Columbus County Singing Union Cemetery. Westside Funeral Home of Tabor City is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include two sons and two daughters.

Family visitation will be held at the funeral home from noon until 7 p.m. Thursday (today).

MARGIE HOYLE ADERHOLDT

N. MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Margie Hoyle Aderholdt, 83, formerly of Lincolnton, died Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2007, at Loris Community Hospital, Loris, S.C.

Alderholdt was born Nov. 23, 1928 in Lincoln County to the late Charles Pinkney and Sarah Smith Hoyle. She was former owner of Lincoln Drapery Shop and later, hostess of Lincoln House Restaurant.

Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday (today) at First Baptist Church with burial to follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1-2:45 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Warlick Funeral Home of Lincolnton is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include a daughter, Janie Aldridge and husband Judge Tom Aldridge of Whiteville; a brother, Roy “Doc” Hoyle of Lincolnton; four grandchildren, David Aldridge, Chad Aldridge, Vic Aldridge, Andy Aldridge; and one great-granddaughter, Olivia Aldridge.

WHITEVILLE -- Archie C. Smith, 81, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2007, at SunBridge Care and Rehab of Elizabethtown. He was a farmer and a veteran of the United States Army.

Final rites were here Thursday, Feb. 8, at Brunswick-Waccamaw Baptist Association Building with the Rev. Thomas Nelson officiating. Burial followed in the Campground Cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Callie M. Smith; a daughter, Brenda Gayle Bryant of Kinston; and a son, Donald Ray Smith of Whiteville.

AUSTIN W. WIGGINS

MARION, S.C. -- Austin W. Wiggins, 83, died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2007, at his home after an extended illness. He was born in Marion County, a son of the late Harmon Wiggins and Eva Harrelson Wiggins.

He was predeceased by brothers, Francis Wiggins, William “Bill” Wiggins; sisters, Almead Bullard, and Mary Ella Brown.

Wiggins was a member of Marion First United Methodist Church, First United Methodist Church Choir and Altersgate Choir, Charlie’s Hut Sunday School Class, and also the Wahee Gun Club. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the 398th Military Police Battalion. He worked in substation construction and as a lineman for Carolina Power and Light for 39 1/2 years.

Final rites were held Saturday, Feb. 3, at Marion First United Methodist Church. Burial followed in Palmetto Memorial Gardens. Richard Funeral Home of Marion, S.C. handled the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Faye Edwards Wiggins of the home; a son, James E. Wiggins (Pam) of Aynor, S.C.; daughters, Dixie W. Midyette (Hugh) of Oriental, Wanda F. Wiggins of North Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Cynthia W. Cochran (Tom) of Athens, Greece; brothers, Archie Wiggins (Jewell) of Summerville, S.C., Spencer Wiggins of Adams Run, S.C., and Hamp Wiggins (Patricia) of Marion, S.C.; sisters, Florence Cranford (Paul) of Marion, S.C., Kitty Hightower of Orangeburg, S.C., Rose Gale of Mauldin, S.C., and Eleanor Faulk (Stacy) of Marion, S.C.; grandchildren, Ashley Jordan (Drew), Bryan Wiggins, Kevin Wiggins, and Nina Wiggins of Aynor, S.C.; and a great-grandchild, Tilly Jordan.
