Stallion teams sweep Trask

VINEGAR HILL – The South Columbus High School basketball teams closed out their 2007 home schedule on a high note Friday as each came away with a Waccamaw 1A-2A Conference victory over the Heide Trask Titans.

The SCHS boys made amends for a double-overtime loss to the Titans in their first conference meeting by taking a 77-66 win on the strength of a combined 38-point output by Frederick Bryant and Brandon Keel.

In the girls game, South Columbus rode the 21 points of sophomore center Amanda Dowe to a 48-22 win.

The South Columbus boys put their conference record at 1-8 and season record at 5-15 as they defeated a Trask team that was coming off a big conference road win over North Brunswick.

Bryant scored 20 points while Keel tallied 18 for Coach Nathan Faulk’s Stallions, who led 39-28 at the half. They were joined in double figures by Romaine Vereen with 13 and Bryant Edwards with 12 as the Stallions snapped a five-game losing streak.

Montez Farrior was high scorer for Trask with 15 points. The loss dropped the Titans’ conference record to 3-8.

In the girls game, South Columbus trailed 8-6 after one quarter but controlled the final three quarters behind the all-around play of the 6-foot-3 Dowe

Yolanda McCoy, who had eight points. South Coumbus took its second straight win to up its league record to 4-7. Coach Brett Burroughs’ Lady Stallions are 7-14 overall.

The loss dropped the Trask girls to 0-11 in the conference.

South Columbus will close out regular-season play Friday at Whiteville.
