| Charge upgraded to felony in Tabor City police case
• Former Tabor City police officer Brian Scott Kittell was arrested last week on an indictment charging him with second-degree burglary in unusual “break-in” on Nov. 1. By BOB HIGH A former Tabor City police officer has been arrested on an indictment charging him with second-degree burglary. The indictment upgrades a misdemeanor breaking and entering charge that led to the officer’s resignation on Nov. 2. Brian Scott Kittell, 32, of Paul Willoughby Road, Evergreen, is charged by the State Bureau of Investigation with burglary for the entry of an unoccupied home in Tabor City early in the morning hours of Nov. 1. Kittell is accused of using a “hidden” key to the home to enter and perform a sex act while he was by himself in the bedroom of the homeowner. A report at the time of his first arrest noted he used some of the woman’s clothing in an attempt to cover up his act. Police discovered the incident because Kittell unknowingly dropped his department-issued cell phone in the woman’s bedroom. The homeowner heard the cell phone ringing and called the last number shown in the phone’s records. The number directed the call to Tabor City police who were calling to determine who had the department’s phone. The phone was given to Kittell by another officer at midnight on Oct. 31, records show. Tabor City police noted in November that Kittell reported back to the department on Nov. 2 and immediately resigned when confronted by Chief Donald Dowless. There was no theft of any item involved in the case, according to police reports in November. Kittell, a native of Texas, had served as a sheriff’s deputy from August 2003 until Jan. 20, 2006. His primary duties were as a school resource officer at Acme-Delco Middle School, plus he also served at the Nakina Alternative School. Kittell posted a $2,500 bond on the day of his arrest last week. |
