OBITUARIES

LARRY EARL ROOKS

DURHAM -- Larry Earl Rooks, 59, died Saturday, Dec. 24, 2006. He was born in Newport News, Va., son of James Adams and Wilma Nance Rooks.

Rooks attended public school in Whiteville, graduated from Southeastern Community College, and Pembroke State University with a major in English and minor in religion. He earned his masters in Business and education specialist degree from Appalachian State University.

He was affectionately known as “peanut” because of his love for boiled peanuts. He loved his wife, children, grandchildren, family, and many friends. His love for the Lord, education and others allowed him to touch many lives in a positive way. His wife, Brenda Kay Calloway Rooks preceded him in death in 2000.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 7, at Howerton & Bryan Funeral Home, 1005 W. Main St., Durham, with the Pastor Chris Rooks, Larry’s cousin, officiating.

Survivors include two sons, Scott and wife Robin, of Durham, and Kevin Grant Rooks of Durham; grandchildren, Austin James Rooks and Stephen Shaffer Rooks; brothers, James Talmadge and wife Armanda Rooks, and Alford Eugene “Red” and wife Kay Rooks, both of Whiteville; along with several nephews and cousins.

Donations may be made in memory of Rooks to Surry Community College Foundation Fund or to Southeastern Community College.

MABLE VIVIAN GRAINGER

RIEGELWOOD -- Mable Vivian Grainger, 71, died Friday, Dec. 29, 2006, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. She owned a vault company.

Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 3, at Spring Green Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert Foggy Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include her husband, Rufus Grainger; six daughters, Jacqueline Ballard, Janet Ballard, and Alexis Clemmons, all of Leland, Agatha Scott of Burgaw, Elizabeth Corbett of Castle Hayne, and Michelle Brown of Riegelwood; five sons, Willie L. Grainger, Rufus Grainger Jr., and Gregory D. Grainger, all of Riegelwood, Daryl Grainger and Ronald K. Grainger, both of Leland; a sister, Alice Lucille Morris of Southport; and a brother, William Haywood Miller of Leland.

Viewing will be at the funeral home on Tuesday from noon until 7 p.m. and Wednesday from 9-10 a.m. Viewing will be at the church Wednesday from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. and again following the service.

NANCY NETHKEN

WHITEVILLE -- Nancy Nethken, 86, died Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2006, at Liberty Commons, Whiteville.

She was the daughter of the late Morrison Formyduval Sr. and Margrete Audrey Formyduval. She was the widow of the late John Dixon Nethken.

Nethken served in the Womans Army Corp (WAC) during World War II, being the first woman from Columbus County to join. After returning to Whiteville in the 1960’s to care for her mother, she received her LPN degree from Southeastern Community College in 1970 and later retired from Columbus County Mental Health.

She was preceded in death by brothers, Morrison Formyduval Jr. and William Henry Formyduval.

Graveside services were held Friday, Dec. 29, at Whiteville Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. David Benson officiating.

Survivors include a brother, James Dixon Formyduval of Quinby, Va.; and six nieces.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

ETHEL PERRITTE

CHADBOURN -- Ethel Perritte, 72, died Thursday, Dec. 21, 2006, at Sunbridge Nursing Home, Elizabethtown. She was born in Columbus County, the daughter of the late Braxton Carter Cartrette and Beulah Sellers Cartrette. She was the widow of Woodrow W. Perritte. She was also predeceased by a son, Frankie Perritte.

Final rites were held Sunday, Dec. 24, at Clarendon Freewill Baptist Church with the Reverends Bobby Cartrette and Steward Norris officiating. Burial followed in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Tabor City. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.

Survivors include a son, Danny Perritte of Tabor City; three daughters, Rachel Perritte Norris of Chadbourn, Sherry Perritte Fowler of Whiteville, and Daphna Kay Drish of Wilmington; two sisters, Pearl Tompkins and Jane Norris, both of Tabor City; 14 grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren.

KENNETH DALE STOCKS

NAKINA -- Kenneth Dale Stocks, 58, died Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2006, at Columbus Regional Healthcare, Whiteville. He was the son of Mildred Faulk Stocks and the late James Bertis “Jim” Stocks.

Final rites were held Saturday, Dec. 30, at the Inman Chapel with the Rev. Jackie Strickland officiating. Burial followed at Lou Gore Cemetery, Nakina, with Masonic Rites. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Cynthia Hammonds Stocks of the home; his mother, Mildred Stocks of Nakina; two sons, Kenneth Dale Stocks II of Chadbourn, and Andrew Dylan Stocks of the home; a stepson, Joshua Caraballo of Lumberton; a stepdaughter, Christi Gore of Whiteville; three brothers, J.W. Stocks and Colis Stocks, both of Tabor City, and Glenn “Tiny” Stocks of Nakina; a sister, Frances Stocks Evans of Ash; and 1 grandchild.

GARY E. LEWIS

TABOR CITY -- Gary E. Lewis, 80, died Thursday, Dec. 28, 2006, at Loris Hospital, Loris, S.C. He was born in Columbus County, the son of the late Ed and Maude Phillips Lewis.

Graveside services were held Saturday, Dec. 30, at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Tabor City, with Dr. Thomas L. Ward officiating. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.

Survivors include a son, Caryle “Butch” Lewis of Tabor City; a daughter, Monteen L. Chestnut of Atlanta, Ga.; four grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

EVERLENA A. BROWN

COUNCIL -- Everlena A. Brown, 87, died Friday, Dec. 29, 2006, at Mariner Healthcare of Wilmington. She was a factory worker.

Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 2, at Carvers Creek AME Zion Church with the Rev. Timothy Freeman officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include five daughters, Mattie Andrews and Edell Graham, both of Riegelwood, Amanda Brown and Ella Mae Muldrow, both of Springfield, Mass., and Mary Madison of Bolton; three sons, Cleveland Avant Brown of Riegelwood, Alfred Ozell Brown of Richmond, Va., and Rev. Earnest Jackson Brown of Council; two brothers, David Andrews of Lisbon, and Andrew Wesley Andrews of Council.

Viewing will be at the funeral home on Monday (today) from noon until 7 p.m. and Tuesday from 9-11 a.m. Viewing will be at the church Tuesday from noon until 1 p.m. and again following the service.

There will be a wake Monday from 6-7 p.m. at the funeral home.

NORMAN SPIVEY

TABOR CITY -- Jimmy Norman Spivey, 70, died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2006, in Columbus Regional Healthcare. He was born in Columbus County Oct. 19, 1936, the son of Annie Morgan Spivey of Whiteville and the late Finnie Clinton Spivey. He was formerly employed with Grianger Block Company.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Peacock’s Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Williams Spivey; three daughters, Janice Greenwood of Conway, S.C., Jeannette Inman and Brenda Ward, both of Whiteville; his mother, Annie Spivey; a brother, Ted Spivey of Fair Bluff; a sister, Dorothy Elliott of Macon, Ga.; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Doris “Sue” Spivey.

DEWEY DEWITT HALL

BLADENBORO -- Dewey Dewitt Hall, 76, died Thursday, Dec. 28, 2006, at Bladenboro Assisted Retirement. He was a farmer.

Graveside services were held Saturday, Dec. 30 at Cashwell Cemetery in Abbottsburg. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown handled the arrangements.

Survivors include a brother, Harry Hall of Bladenboro; and two sisters, Tiny Ammons of Clinton, and Nora Mae Ward of Shallotte.

LOIS LESANE

CHADBOURN -- Lois Lesane died Friday, Dec. 29, 2006, at Columbus Regional Healthcare.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by D&A Funeral Home of Chadbourn.

BILLY MICHAEL
ADAMS JR.

TABOR CITY -- Billy Michael Adams Jr., 34, died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2006. at UNC Hospital, Chapel Hill.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 2, at Worthington Funeral Home with the Rev. Marcus Fowler officiating. Interment will follow in the Flynn Cemetery, Hallsboro. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Sarah S. Adams of the home; three sons, Brandon M. Adams of Clarendon, Taylor H. Adams and Christopher L. Adams, both of the home; his mother, Shirley Adams of Tullahoma, Tenn.; his father, Billy Adams Sr. of Tabor City; half-sister, Beverly Owens of Tullahoma, Tenn.

Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. Monday (tonight) at the funeral home.

LOIS WILLIAMSON
BRITT

LUMBERTON -- Lois Williamson Britt, 90, died Friday, Dec. 29, 2006. She was born in Columbus County on June 7, 1916, a daughter of the late Laban Dowell and Berlie Ann Nance Williamson.

A graveside service was conducted Sunday, Dec. 31, at Garden of Faith with the Rev. Charles Locklear officiating. Biggs Funeral Home of Lumberton handled the arrangements.

Survivors include a son, Donald Wayne Britt of Lumberton; two grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifton R. Britt and several siblings.
