CHADBOURN -- Lizzie Cartrette, 102, of the Beaverdam community, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2007, at her residence. She was the widow of William Melvin Cartrette. Born in Columbus County, she was the daughter of the late Mank and Frances Cartrette Cartrette.
She was also predeceased by sons, Raeford Cartrette, Troy Cartrette, Coy Cartrette, and William “Slick” Cartrette; and a daughter, Kathleen Yopp.
Final rites were held Wednesday, Jan. 10, at Beaverdam Freewill Baptist Church, with the Reverends Jackie Godwin and Wade Nealey officiating. Burial followed in the McPherson Cemetery, Chadbourn. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.
Survivors include two daughters, Doretha Grice of Tabor City, and Alene Pfaff of Cummins, Mich.; 14 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and 13 great-great-grandchildren.
WHITEVILLE -- Ester Mae Ray, 82, died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2007, at her residence. She was born in Columbus County, the daughter of the late English Tyree Ward and Lilly Mirum Ward Ward. She was the widow of Marion W. Ray.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12, at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church with the Reverends Donald Spivey and Kenneth Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Tabor City. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City is handling the arrangements.
She is survived by a daughter, Estalene Hodges of Tabor City; a son, Ervin Woodrow Ray of Prince George, Va.; a brother, Fred Ward of Jacksonville, Fla.; three sisters, Letie Myrle Smith of Fayetteville, Lucille Williford of Lumberton, and Lucy Eloise Spivey of Whiteville; five grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Thursday (tonight) from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.
EVERGREEN -- Macon Tart Jr., 41, died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare, Whiteville.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, at St. Paul Holiness Church, Chadbourn with Bishop Eugene Davis and the Rev. Walter Gregory Smith officiating.
Survivors include his wife, Wanda Tart of the home; four stepsons, Timothy of Elpaso, Texas; Lewis of Durham, Terrance of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Walter of Charlotte; his mother, Peggy McClain of Chadbourn; his father, Macon Tart Sr. of Wilmington; a sister, Latoua McClain of Chadbourn; two brothers, Michael Martin of Fair Bluff, and Christopher of Cerro Gordo; three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the home of Peggy McClain, Berry Court, Apt. 302-C, West Sixth Avenue, Chadbourn.

BLADENBORO -- Joyce “Joy” Marie Edwards, 38, died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare, Whiteville.
Final rites were held Tuesday, Jan. 9, at The Bladen Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverends Steven Muse and Richard Mabe officiating. Burial followed on Wednesday, Jan. 10 at Speights-Taylor Family Cemetery, Elizabethtown. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown handled the arrangements.
Survivors include her husband, Bobby Edwards of Bladenboro; her mother, Burton Watford Robinson of Bladenboro, two daughters, Jessica McColskey, and Laurel Lynn Edwards, both of Bladenboro; three brothers, Timmy King of Garland, Kevin Robinson, and Jason Robinson, both of Bladenboro; three sisters, Glenda “Sissy” Thomas of Hallsboro, Christy McDaniels, and Hope Robinson, both of Bladenboro.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Brandie Lynn McColskey; and brother, Jimmy Dale Robinson.
WILMINGTON -- Doris Leah Canady Small, 82, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2007.
Graveside services will be held at Oakdale Cemetary on Saturday, Jan. 13, at 11:30 a.m. with Rev. Dr. Madison Highfill officiating.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, LTC(R) William D. Small, Jr., USAF, who she accompanied around the world as an Air Force spouse for more than 30 years before they retired to their hometown of Wilmington.
Her surviving family includes her sister, Betty Canady Clifton of Garner; daughter, Lynn O’Neal and husband, BG(R) USA Pat of Beaufort, S.C., grandson MAJ Scott O’Neal and his wife, Melissa and great-grandchildren, Brennan, Patrick, and Ellie of Montgomery, Ala.; son, CDR (R) William C. Small USN and wife Robin and granddaughters, MDN3C Laura and Leslie Small of Raleigh; son, David J. Small and wife Mary Hazel and grandchildren, Will, Leah, and Joseph of Wilmington.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Percy Listle and Mary Hines Canady of Wilmington and sister, Anne Canady Odin Wall.
She also leaves special friends Vivian DeVita, Carol Shannon, and Annie Bellamy as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends whom she loved dearly.

RED SPRINGS -- Bonnie Belle Black Mize, 88, died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2007, at Southeastern Regional Medical Center, Lumberton. She was born in Hoke County on Sept. 2, 1918 to the late John W. and Carrie Davis Black. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Wilson Mize.
Mize was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12, at Crumpler Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Diana Killian officiating. Burial will follow in the Alloway Cemetery in Red Springs. Crumpler Funeral Home of Red Springs is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include a son, Raymond Wilson Mize Jr. of Whiteville; a sister, Julia Rushin of Raeford; four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

CHADBOURN -- George Hubert Williams Jr., 55, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2007, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Wilmington. He as the son of the late George H. and Doretha Hill Williams.
A memorial service was held Thursday, Jan. 11, at Chadbourn United Methodist Church with the Reverends Jim Hines and Robert Hill officiating. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn handled the arrangements.
Survivors include two sons, George “Hugh” H. Williams of Longs, S.C. and Craig Williams of Kalamzoo, Mich.; a sister, Sadie W. Shaw of Leland; and two granddaughters.
ALBERTVILLE, Ala. -- Beda Hayes Buckelew died on Monday, Dec. 11, 2007. She was the daughter of the late CHV and Bessie Strickland Hayes. She was preceded in death by her husband, J.L. Buckelew; three brothers, E.S., W.B., and C.H. Hayes; and a sister, Arizona Hayes.
She was formerly from Cerro Gordo. She graduated from nursing school at Baker’s Sanitorium in Lumberton, and worked a year at what was then Columbus County Hospital, before joining The Army Nursing Corp.
She is survived by three sons, Charles of the home, Kenny of Albertville, Wayne of Crossville, Ala. and a daughter, Charlene B. McCoy of Glencoe, Ala., and a sister, Essie H. Mercer of Chadbourn, four grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
Burial was in The Marshall Memorial Gardens in Albertville.
WHITEVILLE -- Douglas M. Carter, 52, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2007, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Wilmington.
Final rites were held Monday, Jan. 8 at Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church. Burial followed in Mt. Moriah Memorial Gardens. D&A Funeral Service of Chadbourn handled the arrangements.
Survivors include his mother, Vivian Carter of Whiteville; a daughter, Kimberly Scott of Columbus, Ga.; and a sister, Marquerite Terrell of Newark, N.J.
WINGATE LEE ‘BUSTER’ SOLES
ANDREWS, S.C. -- Wingate Lee “Buster” Soles, 61, died Dec. 26, 2006, at Georgetown Memorial Hospital, Georgetown, S.C.
Soles was born Dec. 26, 1945 in Tabor City, a son of the late Leo Buddy Soles and Lessie Phillips Soles.
He was a retired carpenter-roofer with Herbert Johnson Builders. He attended the Andrews Church of God.
Final rites were held Thursday, Dec. 28, at Andrews Church of God. McKenize Mortuary of Andrews, S.C. handled the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Marcia Gail Crouncher of the home; two sons, Robbie Lee Soles of Andrews, S.C., and Ricky Soles of West Andrews, S.C.; a daughter, Crystal Gail Soles; his stepmother, Josephine Soles of Whiteville; two brothers, Roger Soles of Tabor City, and Ronnie Soles of Hamilton, Ohio; seven sisters, Geraldine Ward Gaskins of Loris, S.C., Louise Todd, Peggy Fowler, both of Chadbourn, Louvenia Yarborough and Brenda Cox, both Andrews, S.C., Patricia “Pat” Payne of Marshall, and Willa Dean McPherson of Beaverdam; stepsisters, Clara Cartrette, Dorothy Soles, and Rebecca Soles, all of Chadbourn; and eight grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Ann Babson of the home; a stepson, Buddy Kriner of Bladenboro; two stepdaughters, Klizabeth Krimer Williamson of Evergreen, and Tina Kriner Bridgers of Bladenboro; five brothers, John “Bill” Babson of Evergreen, Roger Dale Babson of St. Pauls, Zeka Babson and Robert Babson, both of Bladenboro, and Benny Ray Babson of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; two sisters, Rita Cartrette of Bladenboro, and Judy Rodes of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and eight step-grandchildren.
WILMINGTON -- Audrey Maultsby Floyd, 48, formerly of Council, died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2007, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, at East Arcadia School, Riegelwood with the Rev. Hudson Barkshale officiating. Burial will follow in Carvers Creek Cemetery, Council. Johnson’s Funeral Service of Elizabethtown is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include three daughters, LaToya Anders, Yasmine Maultsby, and Asia Maultsby, all of Wilmington; four sisters, Lillie Maultsby and Vivian Waddell, both of Riegelwood, Connie Waddell of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Cherell Cromartie of Council; and three grandchildren.
Viewing will be held Friday, Jan. 12 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at the funeral home.

LAUREL HILL -- Emily Kay Rockwell, 59, formerly of Whiteville, died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2007, at the Scotland Memorial Hospital, Laurinburg. She was the daughter of the late Paul Garrett Rockwell and Elvia FormyDuval Rockwell. She was preceded in death by a brother, William Joseph Rockwell.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Whiteville where she was the last member of the Deaf Friends Sunday school class.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12, at the Rockwell Family Cemetery. McKenzie Mortuary of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include a sister, Judy R. Ellis of Laurel Hill; three brothers, David G. Rockwell of Fayetteville, Robert Rockwell of Riegelwood, and Paul D. Rockwell of Whiteville.

ELIZABETHTOWN--Charles H. Lewis, 75, died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2007, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Wilmington.
Final rites will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 12, at Wesley’s Chapel United Methodist Church with the Reverends Rusty Willis and Eckie Lancaster officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown is officiating.
Survivors include his wife, Faye B. Lewis of the home; three daughters, Debbi Grosch of Charlotte, Pat Routh of Reidsville, and Shannon Ventura of Elizabethtown; two brothers, James Lewis of Elizabethtown, and Glynn Lewis of Live Oak; two sisters, Shelby J.
