In 1956, downtown Whiteville was loaded with service stations. Here, at the intersection of Madison and Virgil streets, a Shell station stood, where Pawn South now stands. The Amoco station was where Underwood & Millard’s car dealership is now. An Esso station appears farther down the block. All three are gone now. The ice cream delivery truck sports a bumper sticker that reads “Enjoy Eskimo Pies Today!” This image is a 35mm slide made by the late Mabel Prevatte.
