It was good to hear new County Commissioner Ronald Gore asking questions of County Manager Jim Varner at Tuesday’s commissioners meeting.
Too often, boards are content to let administrators run the show with little input or criticism.
Gore, new commissioner Ricky Bullard and sitting commissioner James Prevatte are what appear to be a three-man island on a seven-man board, but even if they can be outvoted on issues, they can still ask questions.
Gore wanted to know why he received only six department reports in a county that has 32. No wonder he seemed a little miffed.
He also asked for salary comparisons on all employees. The News Reporter has been trying to obtain this information for months to see if anyone got mid-year raises, but county administration has denied the request, which begs the question: what’s there to hide? Maybe Gore will find out.
We’ve seen recently what happens when questions aren’t asked.
