WHITEVILLE -- William R. Stringfellow, 85, died on Sunday, Jan. 14, 2007 at Columbus Regional Healthcare Center. He was born in Dallas, Texas on Oct. 26, 1921 to the late Irene and Breville Stringfellow. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his loving wife, Marian and a son, William Jr.
Stringfellow enjoyed being a Ham Radio Operator since childhood. As a young adult, he attended Texas A&M, and then enlisted in the U.S. Army. Upon graduating from OCS he was assigned to the Army Security Agency for the duration of World War II, where he was stationed in Washington, D.C. working on computers to break Japanese codes. This position led to his career with IBM to which he was dedicated for more than 30 years. Some of his hobbies include fine woodworking, as well as restoring clocks and watches. He was a longtime resident of Raleigh, and had recently moved to Whiteville to be near his family.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 19 at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 1701 E. Millbrook Rd., Raleigh. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Stringfellow will be laid to rest at Raleigh Memorial Park.
He is survived by a daughter, Eva S. Cooper and her husband Michael; a sister, Georgia Virginia Stringfellow, of Mount Pleasant, Texas; two grandchildren, other loving family members, and cherished friends both old and new.

EFLAND -- James T. Stevens, 78, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2007, at UNC-Chapel Hill Hospital. He was a veteran of the United States Navy.
Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19, at Mt. Horeb Presbyterian Church, Council. Burial follow in the church cemetery. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Catherine Stevens; four daughters, Elizabeth White of Virginia Beach, Va., Jennifer Johnson of Atlanta, Ga., Rebecca Moore of Carrboro, and Jamie Stevens of Seattle, Wash.; a brother, Charles Stevens of Pinehurst; four sisters, Mary Orci of Palm Beach, Fla., Peggy Moore of Little Washington; Catherine Carlson of Sun City, Calif., and Betsy Telley of Granite Falls; and two grandchildren.

WILMINGTON -- Mildred Ward Edge, 69, died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2007, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. She was born Jan. 17, 1937, in Columbus County, a daughter of the late Josh Ward and Retha Cartret Ward.
Edge was a member of Wrightsboro Baptist Church. She retired from the business office at New Hanover Regional Medical Center after 27 years of service.
Final rites were held Wednesday, Jan. 10, at Wrightsboro Baptist Church with the Reverends Keith Hollar and Kenneth Byrd Jr. officiating. Interment followed at Oleander Memorial Gardens. Andrews Mortuary of Wilmington handled the arrangements.
Survivors include two daughters, Cynthia E. Mackie and Debra Hardee (Randiss); a grandson, Michael Ward Mackie; three sisters, Mabel Gore (Bruce), Margaret Woodard, and Veda Byrd (John); two brothers, Robert Ward (Jean), and Harold “Hubby” Ward (Lorene); and 12 nieces and nephews.
CHADBOURN -- Judy Ray Small Jones, 40, died Friday, Jan. 12, 2007, at Duke University Medical Center.
Final rites will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, at Mt. Tabor Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Kevin Bellamy officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Tabor Memorial Gardens. Smith Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include her mother, Mary Martin Austin; stepfather, Allen Austin of Chadbourn; three daughters, Shawana Mitchell of Virginia, Jessica Davis of Charlotte, and Victoria Baldwin of Fayetteville; two sons, Ahmod Small of Chadbourn, and Ronnie Davis of Fayetteville; three sisters, Carolyn Martin and Gwendale Martin, both of Chadbourn, and Patricia Small of Fayetteville; two stepsisters, Shirley Small of Whiteville, and Vidale Small of Carrboro; four brothers, Henry McGee of Goldsboro, Douglas Martin of Elizabethtown, Robert Martin of Lillington, and Frankie Martin of Defuniak Springs, Fla.; and a stepbrother, Carl Small of Durham.
Viewing will be on Friday, Jan. 19 from 1-8 p.m. at the funeral home and on Saturday following the service.
LOURAINE L. RUSSELL ADAMS
TABOR CITY --Louraine L. Russell Adams, 75, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2007, at Loris Community Hospital following an illness. She was born Feb. 7, 1931 in Horry County a daughter of the late Thomas “Tommy” G. Russell and the late Alma T. Brown Russell.
Adams was of the Baptist faith and a homemaker. She was predeceased by one son, Robert Adams; two brothers, Luke Russell and Eugene Russell; and one sister, Evelyn O’Quinn.
Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19, at the Ward Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. J.T. Adams, Marshall E. Russell, and Alton Russell officiating. Burial will follow in the Antioch Cemetery. Ward Funeral Home of Loris, S.C. is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include four children, Earl Adams and his wife Betty of Whiteville, Rev. J.T. Adams and his wife Mary of Conway, S.C., Charles F. Adams and his wife Linda of Little River, S.C., and Shirley Marlowe of Tabor City; three brothers, Alton Russell and his wife Joyce of Raleigh-Durham, Aubrey Russell and his wife Linda of Cribbtown, and Marshall E. Russell and his wife Donna of Loris, S.C.; three sisters, Inez Todd of Loris, S.C., Bertha Holt and her husband Thomas, and Marie Dillard and her husband Michael, all of Conway; five grandchildren: Melissa Chestnut and her husband Tony, Jonathan F. Adams and his wife Valerie, Jennifer Carpenter, Linleigh A. Adams, and Charles Preston Adams; and seven great-grandchildren.

WHITEVILLE -- Kendall and Delane Kemp, twin babies, died on Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2007, at New Hanover Health Network, Wilmington.
Final rites were held Sunday, Jan. 13, at Jones Cemetery, Clarkton. Union Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.
Survivors include their mother, Kendra C. Troy of Whiteville; and father, Anthony D. Kemp of Whiteville; two brothers, Bryan Edwards Jr. and Anthony S. Kemp, both of Whiteville; and a sister, ShaRonda Kemp of Whiteville.
FAYETTEVILLE -- Margaret Stanley Hayes, 76, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2007, at her home. She was born Feb. 26, 1930 the daughter of the late Oliver Guy Stanley and Agnuss Margaret Branum Stanley. She grew up in Huntsville, Ala. She spent many years living around the world with her husband’s military assignments, Garmish, Germany; Oahu, Hawaii; Falls Church, Va.; Asmara, Ethiopia; and Fayetteville. She is preceded in death by her brothers, William, Lawrence, and Charles Stanley.
Hayes volunteered many years with Womack Army Hospital Pharmacy. During the 1970’s she was very involved in Girl Scouting for the Pines of Carolina. She also enjoyed quilting and spending time with her family.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, at Cherry Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Cerro Gordo. Meares Funeral Home of Fair Bluff is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include her husband of 56 years, William Hayes of the home; her children, Larry Hayes and his wife, Penny Heinrich of Bellingham, Wash.; Camille McCullough and her husband Bob of Orlando, Fla., and Michelle Brown and her husband Jamie of McKinney, Texas; grandchldren, Heidi and Jason Hayes and Zach and Samantha Brown.

EVERGREEN -- Sampson McCormick, 94, died Friday, Jan. 12, 2007, at Liberty Commons of Whiteville.
Final rites will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, at Mt. Horeb A.M.E. Zion Church with the Rev. Tony Mills officiating. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery. Smith Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include two sons, James McCormick and Ronnie Smith, both of Evergreen; two daughters, Ida Ladson of Evergreen, and Florence McCormick of Baltimore, Md.

ESTELLE EVANS PHELPS HOLCOMB
WHITEVILLE -- Estelle Evans Phelps Holcomb, 96, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2007 at the Columbus Regional Healthcare. She was the daughter of the late Archie Evans and Ella Cox. Holcomb was preceded in death by her husband, Ikey Phelps; and a son, James Leon Phelps
She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. Nephew, Wilbert Evans, Maxine Newell and Máe Cartrette were among the many people who assisted Holcomb during her final days.
Final rites will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, at McKenzie Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Kenneth Barnes officiating. Burial will follow in the New Life Baptist Church Cemetery, Exum. McKenzie Mortuary is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include a son; Delano Phelps of Tyler, Texas; a sister, Rosie Lee Thompson of Socastee, S.C.; daughter-in-law, Madeline Phelps of Ash; two grandchildren, James Richard Phelps of Ogden, and Brenda Blake of Wrightsville Beach; and two great-grandchildren.

TABOR CITY -- Joe Soles, 55, died Monday, Jan. 15, 2007, at Loris Community Hospital.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19, at the Holy Light Holiness Church in Tabor City with Elder John C. Williams Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the Columbus County Singing Union Cemetery, Tabor City. Westside Funeral Home of Tabor City is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include a son, Elliott George of Bloomingdale, N.J.; two daughters, Crystal Gatling of High Point, and Bridget Hayes of Hempstead, N.Y.; four brothers, Jimmy Soles of Green Sea, S.C., Gene Grissett of New York, Billy and Roy Grissett, both of Charlotte; three sisters, Dorothy Lewis of Tabor City, Shirley Williams of Patterson, N.J., and Ronnie Gail Abreu of Manhattan, N.Y.

BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- Oliver Franklin Gibbs, 59, formerly of Bolton, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2007.

BELMONT -- Vivian G. Ward Merrill, 79, died Friday, Jan. 12, 2007, at Carolina Medical Center, Charlotte. She was a native of Columbus County, a daughter of the late Bert and Ollie Gurganus. She was preceded in death by sisters, Mary Gaskin and Vera Fowler; brother, Elbert and Owen Gurganus.
Merrill was a resident of Belmont for 42 years; she retired from Belmont Throwing Corp. after 42 years. After serving as Senior Regent of the Belmont Women of the Moose, she was awarded the Novice Co-worker of the Year for community service. She was a lifetime member of the Ladies Auxiliary, American Legion Post 144, Belmont and a Gaston Hospice volunteer.
Final rites were held Sunday, Jan. 14, at Colonial Chapel, Carothers Funeral Home, Belmont. Burial followed in Gaston Memorial Park. Carothers Funeral Home of Belmont handled the arrangements.
Survivors include a son, Dale “Cowboy” Ward of Gastonia; daughters, Carol Lowrance and Diane Ward Hartis, both of Belmont; seven grandchldren; four step-grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren, and 10 step-great-grandchldren; brothers, Lee Gurganus of Avon Park, Fla., and Vernon Gurganus of Clarendon; sisters, Velma Tyree and Ithean Bullock of Clarendon.

WHITEVILLE -- Elizabeth Powers, 62, died Friday, Jan. 12, 2007, at her residence.
Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, at Spring Hill Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Thomas Nelson officiating.
She is survived by a brother, George Emmons of Baltimore, Md.
