OBITUARIES

CHARLES ELMORE
GORE SR.

WILMINGTON -- Charles Elmore Gore Sr., 84, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2007, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. Gore was born in Columbus County, the son of the late Isaac Chester Gore and Lillie Belle Gore Gore.

He was a farmer, a member of Old Zion Wesleyan Church, Tabor City, where he served as treasurer, and a World War II Army veteran.

Final rites were held Saturday, Jan. 20 at the Inman Chapel, Tabor City, with the Rev. Billy Roy officiating. Burial followed in the Gore Cemetery, Tabor City. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Margaret Gore of Wilmington; a son, Charles gore Jr. and wife Wanda of Wilmington; five sisters, Evy Lou Shealey of Charleston, S.C., Jeanette Beck and Betty Jenrette, both of Tabor City, Louise Rhodes of Chadbourn, and Rosa Lee Cribb of Denver; and a grandson, Charles Gore III and wife Laura of Wilmington.

Pallbearers were Rickey Beck, Mickey Branch, Steve Cribb, Gerald Beck, Nelson Lee, and David Ward.

Memorials may be made to the building fund of Old Zion Wesleyan church, 10144 Swamp Fox Hwy. E., Tabor City, N.C. 28463.

DORIS BLACKWELL LEIGH

FAIR BLUFF -- Doris Blackwell Leigh, 73, died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare. Leigh was the daughter of the late Adrian D. and Eula Turner Blackwell. She was a retired textiles supervisor.

Final rites will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, at Fair Bluff Church of God with the Rev. Louis Bass officiating. Burial will follow in the Powell Cemetery. Meares Funeral Home of Fair Bluff is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include a son, Lavern Dean Leigh of Lake View, S.C.; two brothers, Jimmy Blackwell of Fair Bluff, and Truman Blackwell of Cerro Gordo; two sisters, Jackie Blackwell of Fair Bluff, and Thelma Floyd of Garner; four grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Monday (tonight) at the funeral home located at 795 Main Street, Fair Bluff.

SUE LOYLESS GEORGE

WILMINGTON -- Carroll Sue Loyless George, 67, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2007. She was born in Robeson County, NC, August 17, 1939, daughter of the late Early Loyless and Nellie Mae Strickland Loyless.

George was a 1957 graduate of Chadbourn High School, and had attended Western Carolina University. She was a longtime employee of Belk-Beery Department Store in Wilmington. George was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and volunteered at the St. Mary Catholic Church School.

She will be remembered at the 11 a.m. April 15, 2007 service at St. Mary Catholic Church, 5th & Ann Streets, Wilmington. Andrews Mortuary of Wilmington is handling the arrangements.

Surviving is her son, James C. George Jr. of Wilmington; her brother, Mark A. Loyless and wife Barbara of Crossville, Tenn.; a nephew, Chris Patrick Loyless of Leesburg, Va., and a niece, Frances Baker of Casey, S.C.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Delia Loyless Mills and a brother, Wallace Jerry Loyless.

LETHA DAVIS BEST

WHITEVILLE -- Letha Davis best, 67, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2007, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, at Atkinson Temple FBU Holiness Church with the Rev. Charles Pridgen officiating. Burial will follow in the Best Cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include her husband, Lafayette Best; three daughters, Gwendolyn Dixon and Sonja Hopkins, both of Whiteville, and Venita Whidbee of Scotland Neck; a brother, Rev. Roosevelt Davis of Lumberton; two sisters, Doris Hayes and Irene Baker, both of Whiteville; and four grandchildren.

Viewing will be at the funeral home on Tuesday, Jan. 23 from noon until 7 p.m. and Wednesday from 9-11 a.m. Viewing will be at the church Wednesday following the service.

RAYMOND D. MILLER SR.

WHITEVILLE -- Raymond David Miller Sr., 67, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare. He was the son of the late R.B. Miller and Pearl Smith Miller. Miller worked with Federal Paper Company for many years.

Final rites were held Sunday, Jan. 21, at McKenzie Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Ken Baker officiating. Burial followed at Whiteville Memorial Cemetery. McKenzie Mortuary handled the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Carol Mayes Miller of Whiteville; two daughters, Jamie Boyd and Cynthia Fisher, both of Whiteville; a son, Raymond David Miller Jr. of Whiteville; five sisters, Annie Mae Buck of Georgia, Rose Tyree, Dot Reaves and Janie Wallace, all of Whiteville, and Vera Stanley of Clarendon; and six grandchildren.

VICTORIA BAREFOOT
STEVENS

SHALLOTTE -- Victoria Barefoot Stevens, 85, formerly of Wilmington, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2007, at Brunswick Community Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Thomas Napoleon Barefoot and Alma Baldwin Bareoot.

Stevens was a member of Hallsboro Baptist Church.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, at McKenzie Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. W.H. “Bill” McNeill officiating. Burial will follow in the Flynn Cemetery. McKenzie Mortuary of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include two sons, John A. Stevens and wife Betty, and Jimmy Ray Stevens and wife Sandy, all of Supply; a brother, Ralph Barefoot of Wilmington; four grandchildren, Linda Kay MacCalley, Jimmy Ray Stevens II, George Milton Stevens, and David Lee Stevens; and three great-granddaughters, Jessie Stevens, Anastasia Stevens, and Alley Ray Stevens.

Visitation will be held from 1-1:45 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23 just prior to the service at the funeral home.

RUBY ELOISE KINLAW

LEXINGTON, S.C. -- Ruby Eloise Kinlaw, 70, died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2007, at her home. She was born July 8, 1936, in Lumberton; she was the daughter of the late Lofton and Ruby Kinlaw.

A memorial service was held Thursday, Jan. 11, at Westside First Church of God, West Columbia, S.C. with the Rev. Lyttleton officiating. Woodridge Funeral Home of Lexington, S.C. handled the arrangements.

Survivors include her husband, Charles Hewett; two daughters, Tamera Smith of Lexington, S.C., and Debbee Patton of Elgin, S.C.; two sons, David E. Norton of North, S.C., and Larry C. Norton of Germantown, Tenn.; a sister, Frances Butler of Chadbourn; a brother, Layton Kinlaw of Chadbourn; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Kinlaw was preceded in death by two brothers, Eugene Kinlaw and Tommy Kinlaw.

ANDREW HENRY YOUNG

LAKE WACCAMAW -- Andrew Henry Young,61, died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn.

A. WILTON BULLOCK

LUMBERTON -- A. Wilton Bullock, 82, died Friday, Jan. 19, 2007, at his residence. He was born in Robeson County on April 18, 1924; a son of the late Noel Hartwell and Maggie Lowe Bullock. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Ralph, Sam, James and David Bullock.

Bullock was a member of the First Baptist Church where he was active in the men’s fellowship class, Joyful Notes, had served as a teacher of the youth department and had served in other areas of the church. He was a former member of the Lumberton Lions Club. He was a retired fireman for the City of Lumberton, serving 30 years; during which time he became an assistant chief, retiring July 1984. He was a veteran of the United States Navy.

Final rites were held Sunday, Jan. 21 at the First Baptist Church with the Reverends Doctors R. Kevin Head and Russell T. Cherry Jr. officiating. Interment followed in the Meadowbrook Cemetery. Biggs Funeral Home of Lumberton handled the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Elouise Britt Bullock of the home; a son and his wife, W. Morris Bullock and Debby of Lumberton; a daughter and her husband, Sue B. Jenkins and James of Fair Bluff; two brothers, Russell Bullock of Fairmont and N.H. Bullock of Lumberton; a sister, Lena Stone of Rocky Mount; three grandchlidren, William B. Jenkins and his wife, Amanda, Robert Jenkins and Katie Bullock.

ERMA RUTH SMITH

NAKINA -- Erma Ruth Smith, 76, died Friday, Jan. 19, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare. She was born July 10, 1930 in Columbus County, the daughter of Ollie Mae Dew Lee of Whiteville and the late Clyde Franklin Lee.

Final rites were held Sunday, Jan. 21, at Happy Home Baptist Church with the Rev. David Peterson officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Peacocks Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.

Survivors include her husband, Oliver Windell Smith; three sons, Harold Dean Smith, Windell Clyde Smith and wife, Shirley, Edison Lee Smith and wife, Mary Jane, all of Nakina; a daughter, Eva Teleky and husband, Steve of Ash; her mother, Ollie Mae Dew Lee of Whiteville; a brother, Vernon Lee of Whiteville; six sisters, Jeannette Mims of Columbia, S.C., Gladys McDowell, Evelyn Sellers, Estelle Sellers, Gracie Mae White and Betty Bordeaux, all of Whiteville; six grandchildren, Marie Teleky Peacock and husband, Kyle of Lake Waccamaw, Stevie Teleky and wife, Misty of Tabor City, Patricia Blackwell and husband, Herman of Chadbourn, Tabatha Gore of Chadbourn, Joni McMillan and husband, Shannon of Beaverdam, Toni Smith of Nakina; 11 great-grandchildren, Kayla and Noah Teleky, Laney Marie Peacock, Kaley Smith, Kaleb Smith, Kenny Batten Jr., Kilbey Blackwell, Jasey Blackwell, Coy Blackwell, Stacey Smith and Casey Smith.

Serving as pallbearers were Stevie Teleky, John Wayne Porter, Trent Porter, Gregory Hawes, Alex Hawes, Delond Gore and Jimmy Canady.

RICHARD ALFORD
HINSON

WHITEVILLE-- Richard Alford Hinson, 76, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2007, at his residence.

Hinson served in the United States Army during the Korean conflict, member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American League, and Son of Confederacy. He was owner and operator of Richard’s Barber Shop in Wilmington. Hinson was a member of New Hope Baptist Church, and served as a deacon, and a Sunday school teacher.

Final rites were held Wednesday, Jan. 17, at New Hope Baptist Church with the Rev. Roy Walker officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. McKenzie Mortuary handled the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Juanita Jackson Hinson whom he was married to for 56 years; a son, Michael Hinson and wife, Lori of Bolton; a daughter, Tounya Whittington and husband, Paul of High Point; four grandchildren, Michael Scott Hinson, Brian Hinson, Cohen Whittington, O’Neil Whittington; and a sister, Lois Hinson Hardison of Carolina Beach.
