Bryant Edwards
Stallion boys thump NBHS
for first conference victory

VINEGAR HILL – The South Columbus Stallions grabbed an elusive Waccamaw 1A-2A Conference basketball victory Friday night, and this time they left margin for error.

Having endured a pair of one-point losses to Pender and Trask (in double-overtime), Coach Nathan Faulk’s Stallions controlled the final three quarters and got a huge shooting night from Bryant Edwards to take a 66-49 victory over the visiting North Brunswick Scorpions.

Edwards, the Stallions’ junior point guard, nailed five 3-pointers and finished with 23 points as SCHS broke a six-game losing streak while putting their conference record at 1-5. The Stallions will take a 4-11 record into Wednesday’s non-conference home game with West Columbus.

Derrick Clay scored 13 points and Brandon Keel tallied 12 for South Columbus, which outscored North Brunswick 17-7 in the second quarter for 36-27 halftime lead. South Columbus closed out the game with a 23-point fourth quarter.

Tyrone Williams tallied 15 points for North Brunswick, which suffered its second straight loss and dropped to 4-3 in the conference. North Brunswick, which had defeated the Stallions 69-65 in their earlier conference meeting in December at Leland, also got 10 points from Sean Sanders.

North Brunswick’s season record stands at 10-5.

North Brunswick won the girls game 52-42 with the Lady Scorpions making a pivotal 14-4 run in third quarter.

South Columbus had beaten the Lady Scorpions 41-24 in their December meeting at Leland.

Kelly Strickland scored a game-high 12 points for South Columbus. Yolanda McCoy followed with 11 and Amanda Dowe had 10. The loss dropped the Lady Stallions to 2-4 in conference and 5-10 overall.

Latesha Harrison scored 10 points to lead North Brunswick scorers. The win put the Lady Scorpion record at 2-5.

Along with their games with West Columbus on Wednesday, the Stallions will play host to Whiteville on Thursday and will travel to play East Columbus on Friday
