OBITUARIES

RICHARD ALFORD HINSON

WHITEVILLE -- Richard Alford Hinson, 76, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2007, at his residence.

Hinson served in the United States Army during the Korean conflict, member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American League, and Son of Confederacy. He was owner and operator of Richard’s Barber Shop in Wilmington. Hinson was a member of New Hope Baptist Church, and served as a deacon, and a Sunday school teacher.

Final rites were held Wednesday, Jan. 17, at New Hope Baptist Church with the Rev. Roy Walker officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. McKenzie Mortuary handled the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Juanita Jackson Hinson whom he was married to for 56 years; a son, Michael Hinson and wife, Lori of Bolton; a daughter, Tounya Whittington and husband, Paul of High Point; four grandchildren, Michael Scott Hinson, Brian Hinson, Cohen Whittington, O’Neil Whittington; and a sister, Lois Hinson Hardison of Carolina Beach.

Memorials may be made to New Hope Baptist Church, Whiteville, N.C. 28472.

LISA JEANNE HANKIN

WHITEVILLE -- Lisa Jeanne Hankin, 43, died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2007, at her residence.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by McKenzie Mortuary of Whiteville.

CHARLES LYNN GUYTON

BLADENBORO -- Charles Lynn Guyton, 59, died Monday, Jan. 22, 2007, at his home. He was the son of the late Bennie and Sadie Guyton and the widower of Doris Guyton. He was a pipe welder and a United States Army veteran.

Final rites were held Wednesday, Jan. 24, at the Bladen Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerry Green officiating. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown handled the arrangements.

Survivors include two sons, Michael Guyton and Mark Williams, both of Bladenboro; two daughters, Vickie Simmos of Hope Mills, and Regina Pait of Bladenboro; a brother, Hubert “Buster” Guyton of Charlotte; three sisters, Peggy Burney and Margaret Baxley, both of Bladenboro, and Margie Bryan of Florida; 16 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

WILLIAM LESTER ‘BILLY’ LAND

TABOR CITY -- William Lester “Billy” Land Jr., 59, died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2007, at Hospice Care Center, Wilmington. He was born in Guilford County, the son of the late William Lester Land Sr. and Norma Miller Land.
Final rites were held Tuesday, Jan. 23, at Old Zion Wesleyan Church with the Rev. Billy Roy officiating. Burial followed in the Old Zion Cemetery, Tabor City. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.

Survivors include two daughters, Anne Lockey of Charlotte and Carol Gonzalez of High Point; five brothers, Bud Land of Newport, Major Land and George Land, both of High Point, Kenny Land of Asheboro, and Larry Land of Calabash; and three grandchildren.

WILLARD ‘PAUL’ STANLEY

CLARENDON -- Willard “Paul” Stanley, 81, died Monday, Jan. 22, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare. He was born in Columbus County, the son of the late Henry Emerson Stanley and Vira Hinson Stanley. He was a United States Navy veteran, and an active member of Forest Lawn Baptist Church.

Final rites were held Wednesday, Jan. 24, at Forest Lawn Baptist Church with the Reverends Jim Ponder and Hubert Stanley officiating. Burial followed in the Stanley Cemetery, Clarendon. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Yvonne “Bonnie” Stanley of the home; two sons, Willard Dale Stanley of Clarendon, and Henry Dewayne Stanley of Southport; two brothers, Hubert C. Stanley of Raleigh, and Selmon Stanley of Clarendon; four sisters, Gladys Mills of Clarendon, June Nichols and Loraine Bullock, both of Chadbourn, and Lucille Cox of Tabor City; and six grandchildren.

OLIVER FRANKLIN GIBBS

BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- Oliver Franklin Gibbs, 59, formerly of Bolton, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2007 in New York.

Final rites were held on Wednesday, Jan. 24 at Green’s Chapel Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Henry Jones and Elder Shawn Maynor officiating. Burial followed in the Restwell Cemetery, Bolton. Smith Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Gertrude Gibbs of Brooklyn, N.Y,; six daughters, Sheena Tucker Gibbs of Queens, N.Y., Javonne Harris of New York, Deborah Purdie, Dorothy Martin, Brenda Blanks and Shanita Hester, all of Elizabethtown; two sons, Robert Harris Jr. of New York and Sanker Purdie Jr. of Mississippi; six brothers, James, Saultas, and Aaron Gibbs, all of New York, Nathaniel, George, and Roosevelt Gibbs, all of Bolton; six sisters, Mary Deveaux, Betty Webb, both of New York, Lutricia Wilson of Riegelwood, Mary Bazemore and Glennette Freeman, both of Bolton, and Evangelist Barbara Williams of Whiteville.

GLY NORRIS SOLES

TABOR CITY -- Gly Norris Soles, 85, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2007, at Loris Healthcare. She was the widow of Adam Rudolph Soles. Born in Columbus County, she was the daughter of the late Lewis Ezra Norris and Dollie Nealey Norris.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday (today) at the Inman Chapel with the Reverends Roger Small and Wilbur Fipps officiating. Interment will follow in Myrtle Green Cemetery, Tabor City. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include two sons, Billy E. Soles of Emporia, Va.; Bobby Soles of Richmond, Va.; a sister, Donnie B. Norris of Tabor City; five grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

TOMMY HARRELSON

BLADENBORO -- Tommy Harrelson, 61, died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2007, at Southeastern Regional Medical Center, Lumberton. He was preceded in death by his mother, Earline Harrelson.

He was a member of Bladen Masonic Lodge 646 A.F. & A.M.

Final rites will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 26, at Northside Baptist Church, Bladenboro with the Rev. Scott Lewis and Kay Meismer officiating. Burial will follow in Pinecrest Cemetery, Bladenboro. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include a son, Clayton Harrelson of Whiteville; a brother, Ernest Harrelson of Holden Beach; and a grandchild.

The family will receive friends Thursday (tonight) from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

ANDREW HENRY YOUNG

LAKE WACCAMAW -- Andrew Henry Young, 61, died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare. He was the son of the late James Curtis Young.

Final rites were held Wednesday, Jan. 24, at St. James Baptist Church with the Reverends Graylen Mitchell and Ronald Campbell officiating. Interment followed in the St. James Memorial Cemetery, Lake Waccamaw. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn handled the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Rebecca Patrick Young of the home; two daughters, Rita Mitchell of Lake Waccamaw, and Melissa Page of Evergreen; three sons, Matthew Collins Young of Council, Joshua Grant Young and Jason Philip Young, both of Lake Waccamaw; mother, Annie Geneva Moore of Council; three brothers, James Carson “Billy” Young, Rogers C. Young, and John B. Young, all of Council; four sisters, Wanda Faye Graham and Carolyn Young, both of Council, Janet Sue Graham of Whiteville, and Mazie C. Jacobs of Lake Waccamaw; and five grandchildren.

BEULAH BOWEN DUNCAN

WHITEVILLE -- Beulah Bowen Duncan, 83, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2007, at her residence. She was the daughter of the late Melvin and Delphie Penny Bowen and the widow of the John Monroe Duncan.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday (today) at West Whiteville Baptist Church with the Rev. Linzy Nance officiating. Interment will follow at Lewis Cemetery, Bladenboro. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include two daughters, Libby Herring of Whiteville, and Dianne Leonard of Shallotte; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
