CLARENDON -- Emma Neil Ward Hardie, 70, died Friday, Jan. 27, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare. She was the daughter of the late Cleve Ward and Carline Reaves Ward Ansbach. She was a storekeeper and a homemaker.
Final rites were held Sunday, Jan. 28, at Inman Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverends Wayne Faulk and Stanford Roberts, and Dr. Thomas L. Ward officiating. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.
Survivors include her husband, Brooks Hardie of the home; a daughter, Vickie Hardie and a granddaughter, Jessica Edwards, both of Clarendon; two sisters, Helen Watts of Tabor City, and Phyllis Teems of Dallas; two brothers, Dr. Thomas L. Ward of Whiteville, and C.T. Ward of High Point.
Active pallbearers were Jasper Royals, Jonathan Strickland, Steve Sykes, Richard Simmons, David Marlowe, and Tommy Marlowe. Honorary pallbearers were Tony Ward, Shane Ward, Ricky Fowler, Ronnie Hardy, and Harry Hardy Jr.
ARLENE VIRGINIA SHIELDS BLANCHARD
PRESQUE ISLE, Maine -- Arlene Virginia Sheilds Blanchard, 80, died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2007, at her home. She was born Sept. 27, 1926 in Houlton the daughter of Harold and Susan (Adams) Shields. She was the widow of Richard B. Blanchard.
Blanchard was a member of the Grant Memorial United Methodist Church. She graduated from Oakfield High School in 1944 then from Whidden Memorial Hospital School of Nursing of Everett, Mass. in 1948. she met her soon to be husband of 47 years, Richard while working at Houlton Regional Hospital and they married Oct. 21, 1953. Her carreer in nursing also included the Mars Hill Nursing Home and the Presque Isle Nursing Home.
Final rites were held Sunday, Jan. 28, at Grant Memorial United Methodist Church, on Fleetwood St. in Presque Isle, with the Rev. David Williams officiating. A spring interment will be held at Fairmount Cemetery in Presque Isle. Duncan-Graves Funeral Home of Presque Isle, Maine handled the arrangements.
Survivors include her two sons, Steven Blanchard and wife Mary Sue of Whiteville, and David Blanchard of Presque Isle; a daughter, Lee Ann Mathis and her husband Keith of Presque Isle, Maine, a granddaughter, Danielle Mathis of Presque Isle, Maine; four nieces and several cousins including a special cousin, Evelyn Blake of Brewer, Maine.

DELCO -- Joseph C. Gore, 72, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2007.

LAKE WACCAMAW -- Oree Columbia Young, 86, of the St. James community, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2007, at his residence. He was the son of the late James “Jim” Curtis and Ida Graham Young and the husband of the late Marie Webb Young.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 31, at Union Baptist Church with the Reverends Ronald Campbell, Arthur Smith, Graylen Mitchell and Michael Jacobs officiating. Burial will follow in the St. James Memorial Cemetery. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include three daughters, Alice Simmons of Clinton, Patricia Smith of Lake Waccamaw, and Melba Russ of Jacksonville, Fla.; five sons, Allen Young and David Young, both of Clinton, Phillip Young of San Antonio, Texas, Kenneth Young of Laguna Beach, Calif., and Delton Young of Lake Waccamaw; two sisters, Hazel Goodman of Fayetteville, and Barbara Young of Council; two brothers, Junior Young of Council and Herbert Young of East Arcadia; 20 grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30 at the funeral home.
BLADENBORO -- Alda Muse Davis, 70, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2007, at Liberty Commons Nursing Center, Whiteville.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, at Peace Baptist Church, Bladenboro. Burial will follow in Singletary Cemetery, Butters. Lewis-Bowen Funeral Home of Bladenboro is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include two sons, Frank Muse of Whiteville, and Steve Muse of Bladenboro; a daughter, Sue Hughes of Bladenboro; two sisters, Marie Hollingsworth of St. Pauls, and Joan Taylor of Bladenboro; seven grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.
LUMBERTON -- Thelma Charlene Arnette, 55, died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2007, at Southeastern General Medical Center. She was a community college instructor.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 31, at St. Luke AME Zion Church in Bladenboro with the Rev. Ivan Morton officiating. Burial will follow in the Gardens of Faith Cemetery in Lumberton. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include her husband, David Arnette Jr.; a son, Eric Arnette of Mayport, Fla.; a stepson, Daryl Arnette of Atlanta, Ga.; two sisters, Synthia Coleman and Clara Singletary, both of Bladenboro; and a brother, Richard Coleman Jr. of Baltimore, Md.
Viewing will be at the funeral home Tuesday, Jan. 30 from noon to 2:30 p.m. Viewing will be at the Chrysolite AME Zion Church, 1307 Meadow Road, Lumberton, Tuesday from 4-7 p.m. Viewing will be at St. Luke AME Zion Church Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. until 1` p.m., and there will be no viewing after the service.
The family will receive friends at Chrysolite AME Zion Church Tuesday from 6-7 p.m.
EVERGREEN -- Alfred Bowen, 81, died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2007, at his residence. He was the son of the late Ander and Lee Ellen Potter Bowen.
Bowen served in the United States Army during World War II and worked for the North Carolina Department of Transportation for more than 32 years.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Monday (today) at Evergreen Baptist Church with the Rev. Ricky Donaldson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Worthington Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Annie Rose Cox Bowen of the home; a daughter, Dianne Bowen Cichero of Evergreen; a son, Ken Bowen of Evergreen; two sisters, Earline Ward of Whiteville, and Faye Sealey of Evergreen; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
HALLSBORO -- Amanda J. Smith, 97, died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare. She was a hospital dietician.
Final rites will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30, at Second St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. James Eason officiating. Burial will follow in the Hallsboro Memorial Park. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include a son, Rev. Richard Smith of Hallsboro; and a daughter, Dorothy Smith of Orlando, Fla.
Viewing will be at the funeral home on Monday (today) from noon until 7 p.m. Viewing will be at the church Tuesday following the service.
WHITEVILLE -- Lisa Jeanne Hankins, 43, died at home on Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2007.
A service of celebration for the life of Hankins will be held at Whiteville United Methodist Church at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 3. Friends may visit with the family in the church parlor from 2:30-3:30 p.m. prior to the worship service. Officiating at the service will be the Reverends David Benson, Robert Hakins and Donna Hankins-Hull, father and sister of the deceased. McKenzie Mortuary of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include her parents, Robert and Carolyn of Whiteville; and a sister, Donna Hankins-Hull of Little Rock, Ark. She was preceded in death by a sister, Linda Renee Hankins.
Memorials may be made to Heifer International and may be given through Whiteville United Methodist Church.
WHITEVILLE -- Rosa Dale Shipman, 50, died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2007, at New Hanover Regional Healthcare.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30, at Welches Creek Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Thurman L. Chestnutt officiating. Burial will follow in the Welches-Creek Cemetery. Union Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include her husband, Donald Miles of the home; three daughters, Jasma and Kim of the home, and Latisha Shipman of Whiteville.
Viewing will be held from 2-7 p.m. Monday (today) at the funeral home. Family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Viewing will also be held after the service at the church.
