West Columbus boys
blast Red Springs 80-51

CERRO GORDO – By dominating play from the opening tip, the West Columbus Vikings cruised to an 80-51 basketball victory over Southeastern Conference rival Red Springs Friday night at the WCHS gym.

Senior Chaz Everette bucketed 28 points and senior Mikey Bilal had 17 points in leading the Vikings to their ninth straight win.

Coach Michael Powell’s WCHS squad is 8-1 in Southeastern Conference play and its season record now stands a 15-2. West Columbus holds a half-game lead over West Bladen (7-1) at the top of the Southeastern Conference standings.

The Vikings are vying for their first conference regular-season basketball championship since 1986 when they tied Whiteville for the Waccamaw 2A Conference title. Their last outright regular-season came in 1980 when they claimed the Three Rivers 3A Conference crown.

Ten players figured in the scoring for the Vikings as Powell was able substitute liberally in the second half after his team had built a 43-29 lead at the midway point.

Red Springs, which saw its conference record slip to 0-8, got double-figure scoring nights from William Jackson with 19 points and Larry Ross with 16.

“It was a pretty good night for us,” Powell said. “We got to play a lot of people and did pretty sound job defensively.

“We have a big week coming up with road games at St. Pauls (Tuesday) and at East Bladen (Friday),” he added. “We’ll have to be ready.”

The Red Springs girls, who are in a fierce battle for the conference title with Fairmont and East Bladen, defeated the Lady Vikings 76-24.
