Pack girls, Cougar boys claim victories
It was a story that has become all-too-familiar this season at the Whiteville High School gym. On Friday, the WHS girls team charged to another Waccamaw Conference victory with a 57-37 win over South Brunswick. But in the boys game, WHS took another disappointing loss in a 62-50 decision to the Cougars. The WHS boys’ loss marked the first time since February 25, 1992 that South Brunswick had beaten the Wolfpack on the WHS homecourt. In that game, the Cougars rode the play of 6-foot-11 All-State center Preston McGriff to a 58-56 win after trailing by 13 points at the half. The Whiteville point guard that night was current WHS baseball coach Brett Harwood, who scored 13 points. Earlier this season, South Brunswick had snapped a 30-game losing streak to Whiteville by defeating the Wolfpack in double-overtime at Boiling Spring Lakes. The Whiteville girls, vying for their third straight Waccamaw Conference championship, led 34-23 at halftime and pulled way to a 46-27 advantage after three quarters. Junior forward Paige McCallum had another big night for the Lady Wolfpack, tossing in 25 points. Junior center Portia Baldwin bucketed 15 points as the WHS girls put their league-leading conference record at 8-1 and season record at 17-2. Talisha Green was high scorer for South Brunswick, which now has a 4-3 conference record, including two losses to the Wolfpack. The WHS girls were playing their fourth straight game without senior point guard Talena Faison. Faison, a four-year starter who is carrying an average of 18 points per game, sustained a severe ankle injury in the Lady Wolfpack’s Jan. 12 home victory over North Brunswick. Faison is out of the line-up indefinitely, but head coach Dudley Revels hopes she can return in time for the conference tournament. “It was pretty bad sprain,” Revels said. “This being her senior year, we really hope she can return in a couple of weeks. The South Brunswick boys team improved to 5-2 in the conference by holding a 22-23 halftime lead and extending the advantage to 51-36 after three quarters. Ervin Hall scored 16 points for the Cougars, followed by Joey Hines with 14. Keric Randolf and Ryan Waldrep scored 11 points. With a 13-6 record, the Cougars of second-year head coach of Dan McGougan are enjoying their best season since 1993. Nur Abdullah scored 14 points to lead Whiteville. Justin Livingston had 10. The loss dropped the Wolfpack boys to 2-7 in the conference and 4-13 for the season. The Wolfpack boys squad is experiencing its first losing season since 1979. Whiteville will journey to Rocky Point on Tuesday to take on Heide Trask. GIRLS GAME
