| SBHS wins in double overtime to halt Wolfpack dominance BOILING SPRING LAKES A winning streak that dated back almost 14 years came to an end in double overtime Tuesday night. The host South Brunswick Cougar boys basketball squad, behind a 25-point, 13-rebound effort by Ryan Waldrep, turned back the Whiteville Wolfpack 70-64, finally gaining the win with a 9-3 run in the second overtime period. The loss dropped the Whiteville boys record to 2-7, including an 0-3 Waccamaw Conference record, while South Brunswick improved to 9-4 overall and 2-0 in the conference. Coach Tyrone Frink’s Wolfpack, playing for the first time since Dec. 19, was led in scoring by Nur Abdullah with 17 points, Kaheem South had 14 points for the Wolfpack, which forced the second overtime on a 3-point shot by Chris Grant. The Wolfpack led 45-42 after three quarters. Joining Waldrep in double figures for Coach Dan McGougan’s South Brunswick team were Kendric Randolph with 18 points and Joey Hines with 14. Coach Dudley Revels’ Whiteville girls team put its season record at 10-1 and conference mark at 3-0 with a 60-44 win over the Lady Cougars after leading 38-19 at the half. Senior guard Talena Faison scored 28 points, all in the first three quarters, and junior forward Paige McCallum tallied 19 points while collecting 15 rebounds. The Lady Wolfpack was coming off the championship of the Pinecrest Holiday Tournament just prior Christmas. Kat Adams and Talisha Green scored 16 and 15 points respectively for the South Brunswick girls, who now hold a 1-1 conference record. Whiteville traveled to play non-conference opponent West Bladen Wednesday night and it will entertain Trask in Friday night conference play.
