OBITUARIES

MARION HOKE DAVIS JR.

GASTONIA -- Marion Hoke Davis Jr., 62, died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2007 at Gaston Memorial Hospital.

He was a native of Whiteville, and was the son of Doris Bullard Davis and the late Marion Hoke Davis Sr.

Davis was president of Marion H. Davis Jr. and Associates, Inc. He was the owner-operator of three Honey Baked Ham Co. restaurants and a member of First Presbyterian Church, Washington. He was a graduate of Campbell University where he received his BS in accounting. He served in the U.S. Army Reserves. He was a longtime member of Washington Yacht and Country Club, an avid fisherman and sportsman. He was a loving son, husband, father and grandfather who will be missed by everyone he touched.

Final rites were held Monday, Jan. 8, at Southminster Presbyerian Church with the Rev. Jerry Bron officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen “A Quiet Place,” in Belmont. McLean Funeral Directors of Gastonia handled the arrangements.

Survivors included his wife, Barbara Sutton Davis, daughter and son-in-law: Susan and William Wollett of Rocky Mount, sons and daughters-in-law: Tim and Shannon Davis of Charlotte, Matt and Julie Davis- Gastonia, Stephen and Krys Davis of Huntersville, his mother: Doris Bullard Davis of Whiteville, sister and brother-in-law: Ann and Dr. Sivalingam Siva of Gastonia, six grandchildren; a sister-in-law: Mary Ann Welch of Lakeland, Fla., a number of nieces and nephews, special dog: Papa’s Boy Dink.

FRANCES MILLER

WHITEVILLE -- Frances Lee Miller, 70, died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2007, at her home. She was born Sept. 11, 1936 in Columbus County the daughter of the late Roland and Shellie Ludlum Lee. She was the widow of R.B. Miller Jr.

She owned and operated Art Craft Upholstery in Atlanta, Ga. for 40 years.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10, at Peacock’s Chapel In the Pines with the Rev. Steward Norris officiating. Burial will follow in the Whiteville Memorial Cemetery. Peacock’s Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

She is survived by daughters, Marilyn Collier and husband, C.E. III of Whiteville, Sharon Powell and husband, Mark of Wilmington; sons, Robin Miller of Whiteville, Nathan Miller and wife, Diana of Acworth, Ga., Dale Strickland Sr. and wife, Tammy of Temple, Ga.; eight grandchildren, Ricky Gore, Michelle Wilkins, Dayton Powell, Robin Strickland, Dale Strickland Jr., Travis Strickland, Ray Miller, Wes Miller; five great-grandchildren, Ethan Gore, Sara Gore, Chloe Wilkins Macey Strickland, and Jenny Rogers; a brother, John Earl Lee of Lumberton; a sister, Mary Jane Stocks of Nakina.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, Clarence, Albert, Robert, and Kellie Lee; five sisters, Carrie Mae Jones, Lillian Swallow, Ann Capps, Allie Ward, and Ruby Lee.

Serving as pallbearers will be grandsons and Chris Clewis.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9 at the funeral home.

MACON TART JR.

EVERGREEN -- Macon Tart Jr., 41, died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare, Whiteville.

Memorial services will be announced at a later date. S&L Funeral Home of Fair Bluff is handling the arrangements for the family.

Survivors include his wife, Wanda Tart of the home; four stepsons, Timothy of Elpaso, Texas, Lewis of Durham, Terrance of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Walter of Charlotte; his mother, Peggy McClain of Chadbourn; his father, Macon Tart Sr. of Wilmington; a sister, Latoua McClain of Chadbourn; two brothers, Michael Martin of Fair Bluff, and Christopher McClean of Cerro Gordo; three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home of Peggy McClain, Berry Court, Apt. 302-C, West Sixth Avenue, Chadbourn.

EMMA S. BETTS

ELIZABETHTOWN -- Emma S. Betts, 97, died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2007, at her residence. She was a home maker.

Final rites were held Saturday, Jan. 6, at St. John AME Zion Church with the Rev. Jimmy Melvin officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.

Survivors include three daughters, Ida Mae Williams of Elizabethtown, Sarah Palmer of Raleigh, and Mary Ann Hall of Bladenboro; a son, William Henry Betts of West Palm Beach, Fla.; and a sister, Florence McKoy of Elizabethtown.

AUGUST JOHN KRAHNKE JR.

WHITEVILLE -- August John Krahnke Jr., 82, died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare. He was a Whiteville native, the son of the late A.J. Krahnke Sr. and Essie Hill Krahnke and graduated from Whiteville High School and Oak Ridge Military Institute, Oak Ridge. Upon graduation he entered the United States Army and served in the Pacific Theatre during World War II.

Krahnke was associated with Krahnke Cleaners, a third generation Whiteville laundry and dry cleaning business, until it closed in 1973. He then organized Whiteville Mechanical Contractors, Inc. and continued in the commercial plumbing and heating business until his retirement.

Krahnke served on the City Council of Whiteville from May 1971 to December 1975 and from June 1979 until December 1983. He was a past president of the Whiteville Rotary Club and was involved in many civic endeavors in Whiteville including the establishment of Whiteville Memorial Cemetery as a non-profit perpetual care cemetery.

Krahnke was an active member of Whiteville First Presbyterian Church for more than 50 years, serving in many capacities including a deacon.

Final rites were held Monday, Jan. 8 at Whiteville First Presbyterian Church with the Reverends Josh Bower and Paul Woodall officiating. Burial followed in Whiteville Memorial Cemetery. McKenzie Mortuary handled the arrangements.

Krahnke was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Sarah Britton Krahnke and is survivied by his son, A.J. Krahnke III of Whiteville.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church Organ Fund or The Needy Fund, 511 N. Thompson St., Whiteville, N.C. 28472.

FRANCES BROWN MEGGS

CLARKTON -- Frances Brown Meggs, 78, died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2007. She retired from BB&T Bank.

Graveside services were held Saturday, Jan. 6, at Clarkton City Cemetery with the Reverends Stewart Link and Micky Norman officiating. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown handled the arrangements.

Survivors include a sister, Katherine Brown Regan of Clarkton.

Memorials may be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice and Lifecare Center, P.O. Box 1984, Elizabethtown, N.C. or Clarkton Presbyterian Church, Clarkton, N.C.

DOUGLAS M. CARTER

WHITEVILLE -- Douglas M. Carter, 52, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2007, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Wilmington.

Final rites will be held will be held at noon, Tuesday, Jan. 9, at Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Mt. Moriah Memorial Gardens. D&A Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Vivian Carter of Whiteville; a daughter, Kimberly Scott of Columbus, Ga.; and a sister, Marquerite Terrell of Newark, N.J.

Visitation will be held Monday (tonight) from 2-7 p.m. at the funeral home.

GRACE JOHNSON
McLELLAND

CERRO GORDO -- Grace Johnson McLelland, 87. died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2007 at Columbus Regional Healthcare, Whiteville. She was the widow of Joel Livingston McLelland, Sr. and the daughter of the late Edward Andrew and Maude Lee Hasty Johnson.

Final rites will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 8, at Cerro Gordo Baptist Church with the Reverends Mark Brown, Neil Smith, and Hubert McCleney officiating. Interment will follow in the Piney Forest Baptist Church Cemetery, Chadbourn. Worthington Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

She is survived by a son, Joel L. McLelland Jr. of Cerro Gordo; daughters, Linda M. Floyd of Riegelwood, Mary M. Nance of Cerro Gordo, and Susan M. Turner of Whiteville; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and 6 great-great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Cerro Gordo Baptist Church Building Fund, Church Street, Cerro Gordo, N.C. 28430 or to a favorite charity.

LOLA MAE JOHNSON

TABOR CITY -- Lola Mae Johnson, 58, died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2007, at Loris Healthcare System, Loris, S.C.

Final rites were held Sunday, Jan. 7, at Mt. Olive Holiness Church, Tabor City, with Elder Linda Thomas officiating. Burial followed in the Columbus County Singing Union Cemetery, Tabor City. Westside Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.

Survivors include her husband, Hezekiah Timothy Johnson of the home; a son, Timothy Johnson; two sisters, Diana Ham of Green Sea, S.C., and Lillie Vaughn of Newport news, Va.; and a brother, Jimmy Hamm of Greensboro.
