WHS girls now 12-1
Wolfpack boys let
another slip away

The Whiteville High School boys basketball team saw another big opportunity for a victory slip through its fingers in the final minute Friday night.

The visiting Heide Trask Titans of Rocky Point tallied 26 points in the final quarter and gained the lead in the final minute as they defeated the host Wolfpack 71-68. The loss dropped Whiteville to 0-4 in conference play while Trask improved to 1-1.

Whiteville, now with a 2-9 season record, led 34-29 at the half and 51-45 at the end of the third quarter.

Trask connected on five 3-point shots and hit 15 of 23 attempts from the foul line. Kimani Hill scored 21 points, followed by Jaquan Johnson with 18, Edward Lewis with seven and Paxton Lee with 11. The Titans’ overall record improved to 5-7.

Nur Abdullah topped WHS scorers with 25 points, followed by Alex Royal with 12 and Ramel Godfrey with 10. The Wolfpack managed to hit on only eight of 16 attempts from the foul line as it absorbed its fourth straight loss and third setback in four days.

Two of Whiteville’s conference losses have come by three points each and another came in double overtime.

The girls game was a whole other story as the Lady Wolfpack romped to a 69-21 win over the outmanned Lady Titans. It was the Lady Wolfpack’s fifth straight win since absorbing its only loss to East Bladen on Dec. 18.

Coach Dudley Revels’ WHS squad improved its season record to 12-1, including a 4-0 conference mark. It was the third straight loss to the Lady Titans.

Senior guard Talena Faison scored 23 points and junior forward Paige McCallum scored 16. Senior Michele Turner tallied eight.

The Lady Wolfpack, which led 39-6 at the half, has won its last 22 games against Waccamaw Conference competition dating back to the 2005 season.

Trask, whose conference record fell to 0-3, was led by Sha-Kemia Smith with nine points.

Whiteville will entertain non-conference rival St. Pauls on Tuesday night and will resume conference play on Friday when they are scheduled to entertain North Brunswick.
