Columbus County All-Star Degner Axelburg slides home with the game-winning run, beating a tag by Whitevillle pitcher Kirkland Bass Tuesday in Columbus County’s 4-3 victory over Whiteville Optimist in the District 2 Dixie Youth Suplemental Baseball Tournament at Evergreen.

EVERGREEN - Some timely bunting and aggressive base-running in the bottom of the sixth inning lifted the Columbus County All-Stars to a 4-3 victory over the Whiteville Optimist All-Stars Tuesday night in the District 2 Supplemental Baseball Tournament at Bill Johnson Field.

Austin Davis and Degner Axelburg scored from third base in the final inning to extend the tournament an extra game.

Dwight Gore went the distance on the mound for Columbus County. Davis had two hits while Axelburg and Devine Walden had one hit each. Walden and Faulk scored runs in the third inning.

Brett Council, C.J. Dew and Trey Miller scored runs for Whiteville while Council, Miller and Gerardo Maggioli had hits.

Derrick Nobles, Cage Deal and Kirkland Bass pitched for Whiteville, which had taken an 8-2 win over Columbus County in Sunday’s second-round play.

In Monday’s third-round play, Columbus County defeated Nakina 8-1 with Dwight Gore getting three hits, including a double. Chase Bowen also doubled.
