IREDELL “I.M.” SCOTT

LUMBERTON -- Iredell Montgomery Scott, “I.M.,” 96, died peacefully Friday, July 13, 2007, in Lumberton.

He was born Nov. 20, 1910, the eldest son of the late Samuel Devon Scott and Eliza Janie Powell Scott. He spent his early years in Boardman, and later, the family permanently settled in Fair Bluff. I.M. was educated in the Fair Bluff and Whiteville schools and graduated in 1932 from Duke University.

After college, he returned to Fair Bluff to join his father and brothers in the family business.

On October 15, 1938, he married Jewel (Judy) C. Cole of Elizabethtown. They made their home in Fair Bluff until the last few years when they moved to Wesley Pines Methodist Retirement Community in Lumberton.

Throughout his long life, I.M.’s interests centered around his family, business, church and community. He served actively in the Fair Bluff Methodist Church and sat on the board of the Methodist Children’s Home.

I.M. will be affectionately remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, as well as an innovative businessman who inspired loyalty and respect for more than 50 years.

He will be missed by all who knew him.

In addition to his devoted wife of 68 years, six children survive. They are Sondra Dale and husband Ralph Barnes of Winston-Salem, Carolyn Cole and husband Ken McLeod of Sumter, S.C., Cynthia Jane and husband Manuel Diaz of Murrell’s Inlet, S.C., David Bertram and wife Donna Scott of Lake Waccamaw, Cary Glyn and husband Robert Battle of Nichols, S.C., and Mary Ellen Scott and husband Stuart Bush of Doylestown, Pa. Eleven grandchildren and two great grandchildren also survive. His two brothers Sam Scott Jr. and Charles A. Scott and one great grandchild are predeceased. Other survivors include Jane Scott Bell of Tabor City, and Sarah Scott of Fair Bluff. Many nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 21, at 2 p.m. at the Fair Bluff Methodist Church with the Rev. Neill Smith officiating.

After the service the family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall.

A private burial will be held at the Powell Cemetery for the wife, children and grandchildren of I.M. Scott.

LEONA R. MCKOY

WHITEVILLE -- Leona Rouse McKoy, 90, died Sunday, July 15, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville.

ELLA FOWLER

WHITEVILLE -- Ella Mae Blackman Fowler, 89, died Saturday, July 14, 2007, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice Center in Wilmington.

She was the daughter of the late Cortis Blackman and Heneretta Moore Blackman and was preceded in death by her husband Albert Lee Fowler. She loved her church life and family and was the oldest living woman of Palmyra Baptist Church.

Final rites will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 17, at Palmyra Baptist Church with the Reverends Oscar Hollander and Wayne Faulk officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. McKenzie Mortuary of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include two sons, Larry Fowler, and wife Gloria of Nakina, Kenneth Fowler, and wife Judi of Petersburg, Va.; a daughter, Diane F. Todd and husband James of Wilmington; a sister, Vellon B. Evans of Ash; six grandchildren, Larramie Fowler, Angel Fowler, Vickie Jones, Pam Stanley, Ashley Potter, and Karen Prince; four great grandchildren, Keith W. Stanley, Kiel Jones, Ella Leeann Jones, and Chelsea Prince; three great great grandchildren, Avery Stanley, Aubery Stanley, and Macey Matthews Stanley.

Pallbearers will be Larramie Fowler, Keith Stanley, Jeff Stanley, Lloyd Bryant Jr., Benny King, and Kiel Jones.

Visitation will be held Monday (today), July 16, from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

DAVID FREEMAN

BOLTON -- David Freeman, 51, died Wednesday, July 11, 2007, at his residence.

Final rites were held Saturday, July 14, at Lee’s Chapel AME Zion Church with the Rev. Jacqueline Burney officiating. Burial followed in Restwell Cemetery #1. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.

Survivors include a son, Montreal Bress of Prospect Park, N.J.; two sisters, Edna Mae Tribble-Pringle of Binghamton, N.Y. and Renia Tribble of Queens, N.Y.; two brothers, Tanty A. Freeman of Bolton and Darrell Tribble of Queens, N.Y.

JULIUS J. POWELL

JERSEY CITY, N.J. -- Julius Justin Powell, 49, formerly of Whiteville, died Monday, July 9, 2007, in New Jersey.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 14, at Rose Hill AME Zion Church in Whiteville with the Rev. Hardy Ballard officiating. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his sisters, Shirley Gaskins of Whiteville and Carol McDonald of Lanham Md.; a brother Shaar Mustaf of Greenbelt Md.

HENRY A. YOUNG III

COCONUT CREEK, Fla. -- Henry A. Young III died July 1, 2007, following a courageous two-year battle with cancer.

He was born in Watsontown, Pa., the son of the Reverend Henry A. Young II and Geraldine W. Young, both deceased. His father was a Pastor Emeritus in Waynesburg, Pa., and worked diligently to build a lovely Baptist church there. Henry had retained his membership in the church. He also served in the United States Navy.

He is survived by his life partner of 47 years, Julian D. Lewis, who was born and raised in Whiteville. Julian is the son of Margaret Crowell Lewis and Rone Howell Lewis, both deceased.

Henry had a deep love of all living things, particularly his love of animals, dogs most especially.

His love, sincerity, and passions will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

He is now at peace. Prayers by so many friends and family and his Christian faith sustained him through his illness.

He fought so hard. His bravery was an inspiration albeit a heartbreak.

Life without him is inconceivable.

A memorial service will be planned in Florida at a later date.

ROBERT F. MCNEIL

TABOR CITY -- Robert F. McNeil, 79, died Monday, July 9, 2007, at Rose Manor Health Care of Durham.

Final rites were held Saturday, July 14, at First Baptist Missionary Church in Tabor City with Evangelist Bobbie Dewitt officiating.

Burial followed in the Columbus County Singing Union Cemetery in Tabor City. Westside Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.

Survivors include two daughters, Linda Jones and Sharon Williams, both of Durham; two sons, Milton McNeil and Robert McNeil, both of Salisbury, Md.; a sister, Legertha McNeil Frieson of Tabor City; three brothers, Henry McNeil of Salisbury, Md., John R. McNeil and Norman McNeil both of Trenton, N.J.

JEWELL RAY LEE

ALBANY, Ga. -- Jewell Ray Lee, 88, formerly of Red Hill Road in the White Marsh Community, died Wednesday, July 11, 2007, in Georgia.
She was a resident of Magnolia Manor Nursing Center in Americus, Ga. for several years and was a former long-time resident of Atlanta, Ga. She was the daughter of the late Bessie and Wescott Ray.

Jewell was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Rev. Roy Lee. The consummate pastor’s wife, together they ministered to churches in Kentucky, Tennessee, and Georgia for many decades.

After graduating from business school, she earned an associate degree from Mars Hill College. Rev. and Mrs. Lee were members of Briarlake Baptist Church in Decatur, Ga., where Jewell was devoted to her beloved Grace Bible Class.

Final rites were held Friday, July 13, at the Pelham, Ga., City Cemetery with the Rev. Joe Beauchamp officiating. Jamerson-Braswell Funeral Home of Pelham, Ga., handled the arrangements.

Survivors include a son, R.J. “Jerry” Lee and his wife, Anne Sturtevant of Chamblee, Ga.; a daughter, Linda Lee Newman and her husband Bill of Albany, Ga.; a brother, Royce J. Ray and his wife Patricia Ray of Whiteville; grandchildren, Cater Lee Swartzlander of LaCanada, Calif., Derek Lee, Jordan Lee and Shannon Glover Bishop of the metro Atlanta area, Brannon Glover of Albany, Ga., and Jeremy Lee of Macon, Ga.; seven great grandchildren; a nephew, Jay Ray of Honolulu, Hawaii; a neice, Amy Ray Schnitzer of Petaluma, Calif.; and other relatives.

BOLTON -- Leta Freeman Jacobs, 91, died Monday, July 16, 2007, at her residence.

TABOR CITY -- Webster Daniels, 73, of the Dothan Community of Tabor City, died Tuesday, July 10, 2007, at Loris Extended Care Facility in Loris, S.C.

Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Monday (today), July 16, at the New Light A.M.E. Church in Dothan with the Rev. J.W. Nixon officiating.

Burial will follow in the Butler Cemetery. Westside Funeral Home of Tabor City is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include three sons, William Hemingway of Loris, S.C., O’Neil Tisdale of Durham and Bob Simmons of Tabor City; a daughter Betty Hennigan of Tabor City; and a sister, Louise Gore of Norfolk, Va.

DORETHA C. GRICE

TABOR CITY -- Doretha C. Grice, 77, died Wednesday, July 11, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare in Whiteville. She was born in Columbus County, the daughter of the late Melvin and Lizzie Cartrette Cartrette. She was predeceased by a daughter, Faye Worley.

A graveside service was held Friday, July 13, in the McPherson Cemetery, Chadbourn. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.

Survivors include a daugher, Susie P. Cox of Tabor City; a sister, Alene Pfaff of Comins, Mich.; two grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

CATHY L. BALDWIN

WHITEVILLE -- Cathy Lillie Baldwin “Mama Cat,” died Wednesday, July 11, 2007, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Monday (today), at Welches Creek Missionary Baptist Church of Whiteville with pastor Thurman Chestnutt officiating, pastor Annette McKoy will deliever the eulogy.

Burial will follow in the Jones Cemetery. Union Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include her husband, Reesie Baldwin; an adoptive daughter, Kimmy Miles; her parents, Roosevelt and Maggie Baldwin; five sisters, Mattie McAllister, Emily Baldwin, Leverne Baldwin, Thomasena Baldwin, and Maxine Baldwin; six brothers, Earl Campbell, Marlowe Baldwin, Cleaveland Baldwin, Francis Baldwin, Garry Baldwin and Patrick Baldwin.

WHITEVILLE -- Mabel Johnson Wingfield, 89, died Sunday, July 15, 2007, at Liberty Commons Nursing Facility.

MARGARET S. BALDWIN

CHADBOURN -- Margaret “Margie” Stanley Baldwin, 89, died Sunday, July 15, 2007, at Tidelands Community Hospice, Georgetown, S.C.

She was the daughter of the late Joseph Alexander and Julia Estelle Stanley Baldwin. She was a retired U.S. Postal worker and served as secretary of the Chadbourn Memorial Cemetery for many years.

Final rites will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 18, at Chadbourn United Methodist Church with Rev. Jim Hines officiating. Burial will follow in Chadbourn Memorial Cemetery. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.

Survivors includes two nieces and three nephews.

Memorials may be made to Chadbourn United Methodist Church, Second Avenue, Chadbourn, N.C. 28431.
