OBITUARIES

LENWORTH EARL
WILLIAMSON

LAKE WACCAMAW-- Lenworth Earl Williamson, beloved and dedicated husband, father, grandfather and friend, went to be with the Lord on Friday, June 29,
2007.

He was a member of the Lake Waccamaw Presbyterian Church and former member of Macedonia Baptist Church. Earl was a graduate of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va. and served his country in the Navy during World War II. In 1987 he retired from the Soil and Water Conservation Department of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, where he worked in several counties in Virginia, West Virginia, and Tennessee.

He was fascinated by computers and believed that all children should have access to this great source of knowledge. He had a unique faith and trust in the Lord….loving to study about all religions, and reading different Bibles.

Serving as the vice-president of the Southeastern Genealogy Society of Columbus County he was enamored to learn of his roots and to assist others in Columbus County with their heritage.

Earl was the son of the late Archie and Clara Elizabeth Martin Williamson, and was preceded in death by a son, Michael Steven Williamson.

To cherish his memory he leaves his wife, Jean Elizabeth Hood Williamson; sons, Paul G. Williamson and wife, Jenny, Steven Randolph Baum and wife, Joan, and Lynn Hood Baum and wife, Trudy; daughters, Deborah Jean Jankiewicz and husband Tim, Jacqueline Kay Gearles and husband, Dale, and Deanna Leigh King and husband, Doug; sisters, Hilda V. Seary and husband, Tom and Claire Elizabeth Stevens and husband, Bobby; brothers, Charles K. “C.K.” Williamson and Neal Williamson; 17 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Special children, Jeff, Melodie, and Hannah Clarke for their love and dedication shown to Earl.

In 1995 Earl returned to North Carolina to live at Lake Waccamaw after he became seriously ill. He enjoyed his front porch and he often remarked, “I can’t imagine not being able to look at this beautiful creation of God.”

A memorial service was held at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 1, 2007 at Macedonia Baptist Church with Reverend Sommer Bowers, Reverend Linzy Nance, and Reverend Vernon Williamson officiating. Worthington Funeral Home in Chadbourn handled the arrangements.

LUTHER G. HAMMOND

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. -- Luther G. Hammond died Thursday, June 28, 2007. He was born in Robeson County, the son of the late Arthur James and Annie Bass Hammond. He was a United States Army veteran of World War II.

Final rites will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 4, at Meares Funeral Home. Burial will follow with military honors at the Hammond Cemetery in Spring Branch, S.C. Meares Funeral Home of Fair Bluff is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Lena Lou Dixon Hammond of the home, a son, Dr. Michael Hammond of Tahlequah, Okla.; a brother, Gately Hammond of Spring Branch and a sister, Betty Sue Fairfax of Lumberton; five grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, July 3 at the funeral home.

HOLLEY SHAW

CLARKTON -- Holley Shaw, 85, died Thursday, June 28, 2007, at Bladen County Hospital.

Final rites were held Sunday, July 1, at Piney Grove AME Zion Church with the Rev. Robert Little officiating. Burial followed in Clarkton Community Cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Louise M. Shaw; two daughters, Earlene Meares of Clarkton and Sandra Willis of Washington, D.C.; a sister, Rev. Isabella McLeod of Elizabethtown; three brothers, John Shaw and Willie Douglas Shaw, both of Clarkton, and Roosevelt Shaw of Charleston, S.C.

EARL KEITH WATTS

AYNOR, S.C. -- Earl Keith Watts, 67, died Thursday, June 28, 2007, at his home. He was born in Columbus County, the son of the late Charlie N. Watts and Ethel Nealey Watts.

Graveside services were held Saturday, June 30, at Myrtle Green Cemetery, Tabor City. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Betty N. Watts of the home; three sons, Michael Kent Watts of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Earl Shane Watts of Conway, S.C., Charles D. Watts of Aynor, S.C.; two daughters, Susie Galloway of Conway, S.C., Sharlenna Sudiswa of Aynor, S.C.; a brother, Wayne Watts of Tabor City; two sisters, Pearl Stanley of Tabor City, and Gail Driggers of Loris, S.C.; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Timothy Keith Watts.

PHILLIP CHARLES
DAVENPORT

TABOR CITY -- Phillip Charles Davenport, 48, of the Dothan community died Tuesday, June 26, 2007, at Loris Community Hospital. He was the son of Helen Davenport Conyers and Charles Chatman.

Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Monday (today), July 2, at New Light A.M.E. Church in Dothan with the Rev. Joseph Batts officiating. Burial will follow in the Butler Cemetery, Dothan. Westside Funeral Home of Tabor City is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Sylvia Vereen Davenport; four sons, Phillip Charles Jr. of the home, Michael, Kristy and Ryan Davenport, all of Loris, S.C.; three daughters, Quatanis, Crystal and Sophia.

 

MADGE ELIZABETH BUTLER

WHITEVILLE -- Madge Elizabeth Butler, 95, died Friday, June 29, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare. She was born Feb. 5, 1912 in Horry County, S.C., the daughter of the late Moses and Rosa Tyndall McDowell. She was the widow of Marion C. Butler.

Butler formerly owned and operated Bon Ton Beauty Shop. She was a member of New Hope Baptist Church.

Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, July 3, at Peacock’s Chapel in the Pines with the Rev. Roy Walker officiating. Entombment will be in Whiteville Memorial Mausoleum. A Peacock Service of Whiteville.

Survivors include her daughter, Sara B. Barnhill of Whiteville; a grandson and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Edna Sibbett, Lila McDowell and Rose Tyndall and three brothers, Jim McDowell, Glenze McDowell and Moses McDowell.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Monday (tonight), July 2, at the funeral home.

BILLY RAY JOYNER

CHADBOURN -- Billy Ray Joyner, 75, died Thursday, June 28, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 4, at Chadbourn Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. Walt Cooper officiating. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include an uncle, Liston J. Joyner of Ocean Isle Beach.

ROBERT GLENN NANCE

CHADBOURN -- Robert Glenn Nance, 49, died Saturday, June 30, 2007, at his residence. He was the son of the late James Robert Nance and was employed by International Paper for 23 years.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 4, at Macedonia Baptist Church with the Rev. Vernon Williamson officiating. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Sharon Floyd Nance of the home; two sons, Brandon G. Nance and Brian M. Nance, both of the home; his mother, Mary Ann Reynolds Nance of Evergreen; and a brother, Jimmy V. Nance of Chadbourn.

Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, July 3, at the funeral home.

ANNIE RUTH PERKINS

LAKE WACCAMAW -- Annie Ruth Perkins, 66, died Friday, June 29, 2007, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. She was born Oct. 31, 1940 in Robeson County, the daughter of the late Samuel Byrne and Annie Hardin Smith.

Perkins retired in 2004 as an LPN with Columbus County Hospital after 30 years of service of which she was an operating room nurse for 25 years. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Whiteville and a member of Ruth Believers Sunday School Class.

Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Monday (today), July 2, at Peacock’s Chapel in the Pines with the Rev. Kendell Cameron officiating. Burial will follow in Peacock’s Columbus Memorial Park. A Peacock Service of Whiteville.

Survivors include her husband, James Wesley Perkins; two daughters, Johnnie Lou Butler of Bladenboro and Billie P. Bryant of Clayton; two brothers, Sam Smith and Wade Smith, both of Fairmont; a sister, Glenda Groves of Wilmington; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

HORACE RICHARD SMITH

HALLSBORO -- Horace Richard “Ricky” Smith, 40, died Friday, June 29, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare.

CATHRYNE B. WALTERS

BLADENBORO -- Cathryne B. Walters, 80, died Friday, June 29, 2007, at Raleigh Rehabilitation Center.

Arrangements will be announced by Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville.

EVA MAE MARLOWE

TABOR CITY -- Eva Mae Marlowe, 84, died Friday, June 29, 2007, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence, S.C. Born Oct. 9, 1922 in Hallsboro she was the daughter of the late Garland Thomas Ward and Blanche Lular Pierce Ward. She was the widow of Leo Watson Marlowe.

Marlowe was a bookkeeper for more than 50 years with Pierce & Company General store and a longtime member of Camp Swamp United Methodist Church.

Final rites were held Saturday, June 30, at Camp Swamp United Methodist Church with Pastor Danny Chamblee officiating. Burial followed in Twin City Cemetery. Hardwick Funeral Home of Loris, S.C. handled the arrangements.

Survivors include her son, Dean Marlowe of Tabor City; a sister, Elsie Ward Brooks of Monroe, Ga.; a granddaughter and one great-granddaughter.

MINNIE WHITE

CLARKTON -- Minnie White, 84, died Sunday, July 1, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare.

INEZ MATHIS

CLARKTON -- Inez Mathis, 88, died Friday, June 29, 2007, at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, Faytteville.

Arrangements will be announced by Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville.

HOLLY COX EDGISON

WHITEVILLE -- Holly Cox Edgison passed away on Thursday, June 28, 2007, after battling pancreatic cancer for 15 months with dignity, courage and grace she is now experience the “ultimate healing.” She was born in Philadelphia, Pa. on Dec. 13, 1945 to Harold and Betty Cox.

Prior to moving to Whiteville in 2002, she moved extensively across the United States before settling in Charlotte for 30 years. She was employed as an office manager but her passions were her husband, Bob, flower gardening and her love for animals.

A memorial service will be held at Community Innovations Training Center, Wilson Street in Whiteville Saturday, July 7 at 10 a.m.

She is survived by her cherished husband and soul mate, Bob L. Edgison of Whiteville; her brothers, Larry Cox, wife Gail of Marriottsville, Md. and Janson Cox, wife Cleta of Rembert, S.C., her beloved nieces and nephews, Carla, Corine, Debbie, Erik and Yanson, as well as numerous friends, old and new.

The family wishes to thank Advantage Hospice as well as Dr. Martin and his staff for their compassion and care during her illness.

GENE JOLLY

CHESTER, S.C. -- Gene Jolly, 62, died Wednesday, June 27, 2007, at Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte as a result of a motorcycle accident. He was a native of Whiteville and the son of the late Montrose and Gladys Ethel Carter Jolly.

Jolly was employed with Chester Wood Products and a graduate of Whiteville High School.

A memorial service was held Saturday, June 30, at Barron Funeral Home with the Rev. James Sanders officiating. Barron Funeral Home of Chester, S.C. handled the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Vickia Smith Jolly; three sons, Nicholas Gene Jolly of Rock Hill, S.C., Chuckey Deese of Lancaster, S.C. and Mark Deese of Chester, S.C.; a daughter, Sandy Martin of Chester, S.C.; a brother, Frank Lewis of Shallotte; a sister, Shirley Bullard of Whiteville; seven grandchildren.
