TABOR CITY - Relying on some exceptional defensive play, the host South Columbus All-Stars claimed the District 2 AA (Coach-Pitch) Dixie Youth League Baseball Tournament last Wednesday, defeating Nakina 15-8.
“It’s our defense that seems to make us go,” said South Columbus head coach Shane Wright. “We probably don’t hit the ball as hard as some teams, but our kids are usually able to come up with the plays on defense.”
Shortstop Madison Benton had a strong game in the field for South Columbus while Mason Benton and Jarett Whittingon led the hitting attack.
South Columbus went unbeaten in tournament play with two wins over Columbus County and two wins over Nakina.
Nakina, which made it to the District 2 Tournament finals for the fifth straight year, was also the recipient of the tournament’s Sportsmanship Trophy. Nakina won district titles in 2004 and 2005.
South Columbus will advance to the North Carolina AA Tournament Saturday at Leland where it will go against Hope Mills in the opening round of play.
