Columbus DY All-Stars suffer second-round
loss to Leland squad
 

 

DUNN - Momentum from Saturday’s 11-4 opening round win over Bessemer City subsided quickly for the Columbus County All-Stars on Sunday as they fell to the Leland All-Stars 8-0 and the no-hit pitching of Leland lefthander David Zancek in the second round of the North Carolina Dixie Youth (ages 11-12) Baseball Tournament.

Columbus County will take on Red Springs today at 6 p.m. in a third-round elimination game.
Leland sent 12 batters to the plate in the first inning to grab a 7-0 lead. Zancek struck out 14 batters in holding Columbus County hitless. Columbus catcher Zach Hardin reached base twice on errors.

“We just got whipped in the first ining.,” said Columbus coach John Conner. “Hopefully, this is our wake-up call.”

Columbus County had given the baseball a pounding in Saturday’s opening round victory over Bessemer City. Hyland Tyler knocked two home runs and a single, and Dillon Faulk parked a home run and two singles

Ben Conner, Justin Ward and Josh Tedder had three hits each. Tyler, Ward and Tedder drove in three runs each and Faulk had two RBIs.

Conner, Tyler and Tedder each pitched two innings in the victory.

The 16-team, double-elimination state tournament will run through Saturday. The winner will receive a berth in the 2007 Dixie Youth World Series that is set for Aug. 5-11 at Madison Heights, Va.
