Columbus East has 2-0 start;
Columbus South falls in opener

SOUTHPORT – The Columbus East All-Stars posted their second straight lop-sided victory in the North Carolina Jr. Dixie Boys Tournament Sunday with a 14-1 thumping of Montgomery County at Smithville District Park.

The Columbus South All-Stars saw their first action of the tournament Sunday, dropping a 12-10 loss to Clinton.

Columbus East, now with a 2-0 record, has a third-round bye today, and will go against tonight’s Clinton-Bladen County game in Tuesday’s winner’s bracket game.

Hunter Smith pitched a three-hitter and struck out seven batters in Sunday’s win over Montgomery County. The game was halted in the fifth inning by the 10-run rule.

Columbus East had a total of 16 hits, including three by Derrick Bracey and two each by Smith, Ciamillo, Forrest Wayne and Jermal Davis.

After drawing an opening-round bye, Columbus South stepped into action on Sunday and suffered a 12-10 loss to Clinton.

The Columbus South team is scheduled to meet host Brunswick County today in a 2:30 elimination game.

Clinton, which had Gaston County in Saturday’s opening round, held off a late Columbus South rally to pull out the win.

Donovan Todd had two hits while Reno Duncan, Hunter Marlowe and Nathan Nance also had key hits for Columbus South.

Columbus East opened tournament play with a 9-0 win over Duplin County. Justin White pitched a complete-game shutout while striking out eight batters.

Derrick Bracey, Hunter Smith, Manuel Figueroa, Alex Batten and Frank Ciamillo had two hits each. Figueroa hit a triple and Ciamillo had a double.

The winner of nine-team, double-elimination tournament will advance to the 2007 Jr. Dixie Boys World Series, which will open on Aug. 4, at Muscle Shoals, Ala.
