County DY All-Stars fall again to Leland

DUNN - For the second time in three days, the pitching of Leland’s David Zacek proved to be too much of the Columbus County All-Stars as they fell to Leland squad 5-2 Tuesday in the fourth round of the 2007 North Carolina Dixie Youth (ages 11-12) Baseball Tournament.
The loss elimininated the Columbus County team from the tournament as it finished with a 2-2 record.

Zacek had pitched a no-hitter in Sunday’s 8-0 shutout over Columbus County. On Tuesday, the left-handed Zacek yielded only two hits -- back-to-back singles by Dillon Faulk and Ben Conner in the fourth inning.

Columbus County scored its first run in the fourth inning when Faulk ran home from third on a fielder’s choice play. Conner scored the game’s final run in the bottom of the sixth inning when he reached on an error and later scored from third on a fielder’s choice ground-out.

Like it had on Sunday, the Leland team posted one big inning where it took charge, scoring five runs in the top of the fourth.

On Monday, the Columbus team bounced back from Sunday’s loss to eliminate Red Springs 12-2. The game was halted after four innings by the 10-run rule.
Conner and Hyland Tyler each pitched two innings.

Alex Britt had two hits while Tyler, Justin Ward, Josh Tedder and Luke Tedder had one hit each. Josh Tedder also drew two walks and finished with three runs batted in. Ward and Luke Tedder each had two RBI.

Columbus had opened play in 16-team state tournament last Saturday by taking an 11-4 victory over Bessemer City.

The Columbus County DY League All-Star team, the District 2 champion, advanced to the state Dixie Youth tournament for the 28th time since 1971.
