MARIANNA,Fla. - Madisonville, La., handed the Columbus County All-Stars their first loss of the 2007 Dixie Debs (ages 16-18) Softball World Series late Sunday nighty by a 9-3 score.
The game was completed past midnight as most of the day’s tournament games ran well behind schedule.
The North Carolina champions had opened the tournament Saturday morning with a 6-1 victory over the Virginia champion and took a 1-0 win over the Tennessee champion in Sunday morning’s second-round game.
The Columbus County All-Stars will go against Hartselle, Ala., today at 6 p.m. (CDT).
The North Carolinians became the first team in three World Series games to score against the Louisiana squad. Louisiana had opened the tournament with a 10-0 shutout of Florida and then blanked Texas 16-0 in second-round play.
In Sunday morning’s second-round game, Jessica McPherson sixth inning squeeze bunt brought home Samantha Smith to break a scoreless tie and provide the margin on victory.
In Saturday’s opening round game, Morgan Patrick’s home run was the big blow of the day while Joye Buffkin, Brandi Fowler and Caroline Newman each made mound appearances. Virginia scored its lone run in the first inning.
The Dixie Debs World Series is being held in conjunction with the Dixie Ponytail (ages 11-12) and Dixie Belles (ages 13-15) World Series events at Marianna.
