FLORENCE, S.C. - Scott Stephens’ walk-off double in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted the Columbus County All-Stars to an 8-7 victory over Brookwood, Ga., Sunday in second round action of the 2007 Dixie Majors (ages 15-19) Baseball World Series.
Columbus County, which had suffered a 9-4 loss to Goochland, Va., in Saturday’s opening round, will go against Laurel, Miss., in a third-round elimination game today at 5:30 p.m., at Florence’s Legion Stadium.
The Mississippi champ advanced Sunday with a 6-5 eight-inning win over Paris, Texas.
“We’re not hitting the ball very consistently,” said Joey Autry, who coaches the North Carolina champion squad along with T.J. Spivey. “If we can ever bust loose with our hitting, I think we can hang in this thing a while longer.
“Our lack of hitting in key situations helped keep Georgia in the game today,” Autry said after his tam had handed the Georgia champion its second extra-inning loss in as many days. “Georgia had some real good pitching, but we need to do a better job of swinging the bats.”
Stephens and Cory Duncan each had two hits with each hitting a double in Sunday’s win. Jeremy Harrelson picked up the pitching win.
The Georgia team had fallen to Auburn, Ala., 3-2 in nine innings in Saturday’s first-round play.
In its Saturday loss, Columbus County jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and led 4-2 in the second before the Virginia squad tallied seven unanswered runs over the final five innings. Donovan Watts had three hits and stole two bases. |
