The 1987 Whiteville Wolfpack, the only Columbus County high-school football team to win a state championship, will celebrate the 20th anniversary reunion of that accomplishment on Nov. 2 at Legion Stadium.

The reunion will conincide with the annual Waccamaw 1A-2A football clash between WHS and South Columbus.

Coach Bill Hewett’s 1987 squad reeled off 15 straight wins, including a 14-12 victory over Thomasville at Legion Stadium to claim the state 2A title.
Chester McGlockton, the Wolfpack’s senior tight end/ linebacker, who earned All-America honors that season is among some of the players heading up reunion plans.
McGlockton, who went on to play at Clemson and then for 12 seasons in the NFL before retiring after the 2003 season, said that the goal is to have as many players, coaches, trainers and managers from that team as possible on hand for the event.

“We’re probably going to have a tent set up or some type of central location at the stadium where everyone can meet,” said McGlockton by phone last Thursday from his home in southern California where he resides with his family. “Hopefully, we’ll have some the memorabilia from the season and have things set up to show video clips from the season and the state championship game.

“We just want to get the word out to everybody as quickly as we can so they can all try to make plans to be there,” added McGlockton, who served as a captain for the ‘87 Wolfpack along with fellow seniors Rickie Shaw and Matt Tedder.

Phil Justice, a senior defensive end on the 1987 state champion, now lives in Greenville, S.C., and is the main contact person for the reunion.

“We’re looking at the possibility of having a fund-raiser, maybe a golf tournament, as part of the reunion,” Justice said.

Justice’s e-mail address is phil.justice@itsimaging.com and his toll-free phone listing is 888-487-1487.

Other players on the 1987 WHS state champion were John Plasky, Kevin Harrelson, Virgil Cokley, Greg Dillard, Marcus Smith, Mike Hyatt, Anthony Baldwin, Pat Reaves, Rusty Horne, Chris Caines, Hugh McPherson, Herman Jones, Heath Little, Lorenzo Lennon, Chris Caines, Brad High, Shannon Harrelson, Chris Brown, Tony Southern, Ricky Harrelson, Kelvin Fleming, Eric Shelley, Thomas Covington, Otis Pridgen, Rico Best,Chris Etheridge, Benji Cox, Grayson Inman, Bill Sessoms, Jerry Hemingway, Bill Chepul, Patrick Thompson, Scott Crabtree, Ronnie Ezzell, Brian Cartrette, Richard Dix.
