UNC-bound lefthander Shayne Hammond pitches a three-hit shut-out for the Whiteville Post 137 American Legion baseball team in a 4-0 victory over Brunswick County Post 68 at Leland to clinch the best-of-five Area 2-West playoff series. Hammond, who has just completed a standout high school pitching career at West Columbus, strikes out nine Post 68 batters. Bert Thomas and Scott Absher each have two hits for Coach Linwood Hedgpeth’s Post 137 team and Mark Council drives a two-run single.
