OBITUARIES

 

OREE HILL

WHITEVILLE -- Oree Hill, 61, died Tuesday, July 3, 2007.

Final rites were held Saturday, July 7, at Cherry Grove Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Henry Jones Jr. officiating. Burial followed in the Cherry Grove Cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Ann P. Hill; three daughters, Sheila Hill of Philadelphia, Pa., Penda Miller and Jasmine Pittman of Durham; four sons, Dwight Hill, Roy Robinson, and Caleb Hill, all of Whiteville, and Cedric Pittman of Suitland, Md.; two sisters, Nancy Hill and Myrtle Martin of Whiteville.

ROBERT LLOYD KINLAW

WHITEVILLE -- Robert Lloyd Kinlaw, 79, died Wednesday, July 4, 2007, at his residence.

Final rites were held Saturday, July 7, at Lewis-Bowen Funeral Home. Burial followed in the New Pait Cemetery, Bladenboro. Lewis-Bowen Funeral Home of Bladenboro handled the arrangements.

Survivors include two sons, Dale Kinlaw of Whiteville, and Lang Kinlaw of Clarendon; three daughters, Jenelle Stewart and Robin Giles, both of Whiteville, and Sabrina Cartrette of Clarendon; a sister, Billie Hicklin of Kings Mountain; three brothers, Clifton Kinlaw of Gastonia, Alton Kinlaw of Bladenboro, and Kenneth Kinlaw of Pawleys Island, S.C.; and 12 grandchildren.

GLORIA JEAN BUFFKIN

TABOR CITY -- Gloria Jean Buffkin, 55, died Thursday, July 5, 2007, at her residence.

Final rites were held Sunday, July 8, at the Inman Chapel. Burial followed in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.

Survivors include her husband, Ronald Buffkin of Tabor City; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Al Watts Jr. of the home; two sons, Charles Wayne Buffkin and Burnie Eugene Buffkin, both of Tabor City; three brothers, Ronnie, Jerry and Gary Watts, all of Tabor City; and three grandchildren.

FRANCIS NEIL HAMMOND

NAKINA -- Francis Neil Hammond, 61, died Thursday, July 5, 2007, at Columbus Regional Health Care.

Final rites were held Sunday, July 8, at Palmyra Baptist Church with the Rev. Oscar Hullender officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. McKenzie Mortuary of Whiteville handled the arrangements.

He was the son of the late Charlie and Lucille Andres Hammond. He was a member of Palmyra Baptist Church and worked at McKenzie Mortuary for more than 29 years.

Survivors include his wife June Hayes Hammond of Nakina; sons, Bradley Neil Hammond of Nakina and Jason Hayes Hammond of Whiteville; sisters, Daphne H. McDowell of Loris, Sue H. Thompson of Florence and Brenda H. Jarman of Whiteville; brothers, Wade Hammond of Holden Beach, Charles Hammond of Whiteville and Marcus Hammond of Chadbourn; and 4 grandchildren.

ELIZABETH PAYNE

WHITEVILLE -- Elizabeth Lee Walker Payne, 81, died Saturday, July 7, 2007, at Shoreland Healthcare. Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Worthington Funeral Home with Chaplin Kerry Peeler officiating. Burial will follow in the Walker Family Cemetery. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include a son, Simon Lee “Pete” Payne of Shallotte; sisters, Ethel Marie Aylesworth of Mountain Home, Ark., Alice W. Romig of Kennesaw, Ga., Jane W. Romig and Rebecca W. Brzozowski both of Orlando Fla., Miriam W. Tedder of Shallotte, and Mattie “Sudie” W. Nealey of Tabor City; brothers, Harvey Paul Walker of Chadbourn and James C. “Buddy” Walker of Goose Creek, S.C.; four grandchildren and several great grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 7-9 p.m. Monday (today) at the funeral home.

FREIDA PHIPPS

TABOR CITY -- Freida Butler Phipps, 53, died Thursday, July 5, 2007, in Rex Hospital, Raleigh N.C.

She was born in Columbus County, the daughter of the late Thurman Clement and Helen Waddell Butler.

Final rites will be held Monday (today) at 2 p.m. at Old Zion Wesleyan Church with the Rev. Billy Ray officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include her husband, Roger Phipps of Tabor City; daughters, Marla Roberson of Wilmington and Emily Herndon of Garner; a brother, Dr. Jackson Butler of Durham; and a grandson.

NANCY L. WALKER

CHADBOURN -- Nancy Lee Lewis Walker, 82, died Monday, July 9, 2007, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice Care Center.
Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn.

She was the daughter of the late Thomas Smith and Maude Glasgow Lewis.

Survivors include her husband, Dave Walker of the home; a daughter, Nancy W. Black of Wilmington; sons, Rick Walker of Youngstown, Ohio and John Walker of Winterville; a sister, Martha Giles of Davis; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

HERBERT M. QUINN

GREENSBORO -- Herbert Marsail Quinn, 27, formerly of Chadbourn, died Saturday, July 7, 2007, at his residence.
S&L Funeral Home of Fair Bluff is handling the arrangements.

The family will receive friends at the home of Mr. Robert and Deloris Chavis, 184 Dessie Road, Chadbourn N.C.

MARION J. BUNYAN

WHITEVILLE -- Marion Judy Bunyan, 68, died Saturday, July 7, 2007, at her residence.
