County teams prep for District 9 Dixie Girls Tournament

Eleven all-star teams from Columbus County will compete in the 2007 District 9 Dixie Girls Softball Tournament June 14-17 at Northwest Park near Leland.

Levels of tournament play will be Dixie Darlings (ages 6-8), Dixie Angels (ages 9-10). Dixie Ponytails (11-12) and Dixie Belles (13-15).

Winners of each of the double-elimination tournaments will advance to state tournament play at Shallotte.

Darlings play will open on Thursday, June 14, with a game between Central Columbus and South Columbus at 3 p.m. East Columbus will tangle with Waccamaw (Ash) at 5 p.m. The other first-round game will have Burgaw taking on Leland at 7 p.m.

In the Angels bracket, Central Columbus will take the field against Shallotte at 2 p.m., followed by a match-up between South Columbus and Burgaw at 4. East Columbus and Leland will square off at 6 p.m.

Dixie Ponytails tournament play will begin at 3 p.m. Thursday with Burgaw taking on East Columbus. South Columbus and Central Columbus will meet at 5 p.m., and Lockwood Folly and Waccamaw are scheduled to clash at 7.

In Dixie Belles play, East Columbus and Burgaw will meet Thursday at 4 p.m., and South Columbus will go against Brunswick West at 6. Brunswick South has an opening-round bye.

The Columbus County Dixie Deb (ages 16-18) All-Stars have an automatic berth in state tournament play.

Columbus County teams have competed in Dixie Girls Softball since 1976.
