| News Reporter, BB&T to meet in Optimist DY tourney finals tonight By DAN BISER Regular-season champion News Reporter and runnerup BB&T will meet tonight at 7:30 at Harritan Field in the championship game of the 2007 Whiteville Optimist Dixie Youth League Baseball Tournament. In Thursday’s semifinal round, News Reporter bolted past Swing Away 12-2, and BB&T held off Whiteville Chiropractic to earn berths in tonight’s finals. The game will follow tonight’s championship game of the Whiteville DY Minor League Tournament. (See story below). News Reporter 12 Tyquan McDonald and Daylon Hucks combined to pitch a no-hitter in the News Reporter victory and McDonald sparked a seven-run third inning with a grand-slam home run. Seth Butler had a triple and C.J. Hammonds doubled for News Reporter while Hucks and Mikie Foxworth had singles. Bryce Parnell drove in two runs and C.J. Dew drove in another. Josh Meares tallied two runs and Trevor Sellers also scored a run. Shaquan Smith and Taj Powell scored the Swing Away runs and Cage Deal had an RBI. BB&T 4 This semi-final match-up featured a strong pitching duel between BB&T’s Nick Honeycutt and Whiteville Chiropractic’s Zack Brown. Honeycutt struck out 11 batters while yielding five hits, and Brown struck out 10 while giving up four hits. BB&T’s Geraldo Maggioli had the big blast of the game with a two-run homer. Ryan Ciamillo had two hits, including a double, and Austin Reaves had the other BB&T hit. Honeycutt also had an RBI. Derrick Nobles ripped a triple for Whiteville Chiropractic while Bronson Best, Scottie Deans, Cameron Piggott and Josh Basabus also had hits. |
