Whiteville City Schools hires two new principals

The Whiteville City Schools Board of Education opted to hire from outside its ranks Monday night when it employed two new principals – John Westberg from Catawba County and Frederick Hill from Guilford County.
Westberg, principal of the 1,000-student Bandys High School, will replace Whiteville High School’s Kyle Ramey, who is retiring at the end of this month.
Hill, assistant principal at the 1,037-student Andrews High School in High Point, will replace the retiring Dr. Beverly Boone at Central Middle School.

In other personnel action, the board approved the following:
At Whiteville Primary the contract of school nurse Janet Gray was extended one year.
The employment of probationary “licensed” personnel was approved for the next school year and included Sarah Guzman, Joy McDonald, Cassie McPherson, Jolene Murray, Maria Todd, Ida Jeanette Watson and Rachel Williams.
Tenure was approved for Beth Martin and Marilyn McDonald. Both had been tenured previously by other school systems.
First-tenure was granted to Bambi Bowen.
At Edgewood Elementary, child nutrition assistant Nancy Hamilton resigned. Teacher Linda Jablonowski retired.
Academically and intellectually gifted student teacher Allison Burns resigned.
Child nutrition assistant Robert Alan Duncan retired.
School nurse Clarissa McPherson’s employment was extended through the next school year.
The employment of probationary “licensed” personnel was approved for the next school year and included Geraldine Hinson, Ethel Warner, JoAnn Cooper and Loneese Powell.
First-time tenure was granted to Georgiana Sealey and Lisa Shaw.
At Central Middle School assistant principal Thomas McLam’s contract was extended through 2011.
School nurse Larissa Reaves was employed through the next school year.
Sixth grade teacher June Hammond was reassigned to Edgewood Elementary School.
Custodian Jerry Hemingway was reassigned as a district-wide maintenance employee.
Computer lab facilitator Emma Ivey’s employment was extended through the next school year.
The employment of probationary “licensed” personnel was approved for the next school year and included Ava Arp, Todd Burney, Donna McElveen, Charlotte Raney, Juanita Smith, June Hewett, Andrei Kamini, Beth McQueen, Trina Rising, Cara Roberds, Shanequa Collier, Bruce Ketcham, Elizabeth Roberson, Leontine Stroman, June Hammond and Arnold Harwood.
Tenure was granted to Eugenia Stanaland, Mary Louise Bannerman and Angela Bullard, who had been previously tenured by other school systems.
At Whiteville High School, job coach Marcee Swindell-Thompson, assistant principal Ernie Gaskins and JROTC instructor LeeRoy Hannah Jr. tendered their resignations.
English teacher Margie Grissett is retiring as is family and consumer science teacher Debbie Godwin and Spanish teacher Armanda Rooks.
Maintenance worker Paul Register is also retiring.
Math teacher Barbara Knowles resigned.
Luis Ortega was employed as a Spanish teacher. Pam Merritt was employed as an interim temporary non-licensed math teacher for the next school year.
The employment of probationary “licensed” personnel was approved for the next school year and included Gina Deans, Tyrone Frink, Janie Eve Waddell, Amy Arrington, Michael Buckpitt, Kathryn Ferguson, Nicky Hobbs, Cindy Parker, Pam Soles, Anna Hall, Brett Harwood, Melanie Mayberry, W.C. Butler and Patricia Davis.
Tenure was approved for Juanita Calllihan, Jenifer Hester and Lang Kinlaw, all granted tenure in previous systems.
First-time tenure was granted to David Higgins Jr., Jennifer Marlowe, Rosemary Phipps and Sunil D. Taneja.
At North Whiteville Academy, teacher assistant Kenzel McCall was reassigned to Whiteville High School to be the varsity boys head basketball coach.
His instructional assignment will be determined later.
Principal Bonnie Parks had her contract extended to 2011.
The employment of probationary “licensed” personnel was approved for the next school year and included Tonya Hannah, Mark Willis and Leon Dockery.
At Central Services, the board extended until 2008 the employment of Glenda Phillips, the director for exceptional children.
Four-year contracts were extended to Kathryn Faulk, director of child nutrition; Anthony Martin, director of media, technology, career and technical education; and Jay Stanley, the system’s finance officer.
Heather Dowless was employed as an accounts payable accountant.
