Wilcox Basketball Camp set to begin on Monday

The fifth annual Chris Wilcox Basketball Camp will be held in Whiteville June 18-22.

Wilcox, who started 81 of the 82 games for the Seattle SuperSonics in the 2006-07 season, is a former All-State basketball player at Whiteville High School who went on the help lead the University of Maryland to the 2002 NCAA championship before becoming a first-round NBA draft pick by the Los Angeles Clippers. The 6-foot-10 Wilcox was traded to the SuperSonics in the 2006 season. He will be on hand at the camp the entire week.

The Chris Wilcox basketball camp has drawn approximately 200 participants in each of its first four years. The camp utilizes the Whiteville High gym, the Central Middle School gym and the Whiteville Recreation Center gym. Registration is set for the WHS gym.

Glenn McKoy, who served as WHS boys varsity basketball coach from 1979 through 2006, will again direct the weeklong camp.

The camp is open to youngsters to ages 7-18 with a registration fee of $50. The fee includes a camp T-shirt, daily instruction, refreshments, autographed pictures and prizes.

The 24-year-old Wilcox, who paced Coach Glenn McKoy’s Whiteville High School team to the 1999 state 2A championship, averaged over 13 points and nearly eight rebounds per game for the Sonics while manning the power forward position.

Friday’s final day of camp will include two keynote speakers - former NBA star John Lucas and William Jarrett, a survivor of the notorious Crips Gang of South Central Los Angeles.
