CERRO GORDO - A changing of the guard.

For more than three decades, the Columbus County Dixie Youth Baseball League has been dominated by the teams from Hallsboro and Evergreen.

On Sunday, two new faces – Lake Waccamaw and Evergreen – stepped to the league’s forefront.

The Lake Waccamaw Lions, who had already established a precedent by winning the major-league regular-seasosn championship, finished things off by defeating host Cerro Gordo 14-6 in the post-season tournament title at the Cerro Gordo Dixie Youth complex.

Earlier in the day, host Cerro Gordo took a 15-1 victory over regular-season champion Evergreen to win the minor-league tournament title.

In Saturday’s first-round major-league play, Lake Waccamaw edged Evergeen 1-0, and Cerro Gordo topped Hallsboro 4-1

In Saturday’s first round minor-league action, Cerro Gordo turned back Hallsboro 11-7, and Evergreen ran past Lake Waccamaw 15-2

Hyland Tyler stroked two home runs and winning pitcher Ben Connor knocked a pair of two-run triples in pacing the Lake Waccamaw victory.

Alex Britt and Josh Tedder added two hits apiece with Britt clouting a double.
Lake Waccamaw broke a 4-4 tie with 10 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Dillion Faulk had two hits, including a double for Cerro Gordo.

E.J. Jenkins struck out nine batters and allowed only two hits in the minor-league championship game.

Michael Lowery had two hits, including a double, and Harrison Prince clouted a triple. Marvin Edge drove a two-run single for Cerro Gordo.

Degner Axelberg had a double for Evergreen.

In Lake Waccamaw’s first round 1-0 win over Evergreen Saturday, a solo home run by Ben Connor pronided the game’s only run. Winning pitcher Hyland Tyler struck out 14 batters. Tyler, Chandler Cecil and Ethan Jacobs also had Lake Waccamaw hits.

Getting hits for Evergreen were Tanner Daniel, Tony Reese, Caesar Ayon and Dwight Gore.
In Cerro Gordo’s 4-1 opening-round win over Hallsboro, Dillion Ford led the way with a triple and a home run, and pitched a two-hitter while striking out 11.

Hunter Faulk and Jared Russ each had a hit for Cerro Gordo. Justin Ward and Forrest Malpass each had hits for Hallsboro/

In Saturday’s first-round minor league action, E.J. Jenkins had two hits, including a home run to help lead Cerro Gordo’s 11-7 win over Hallsboro. Trey Benton was the winning pitcher. Michael Lowery hit a triple and Hunter Ezzell hit a double.

For Hallsboro, Armelin Pierce had two hits, including a triple, and Regan Barnhill had two hits, including a double.

In Evergreen’s 15-2 minor-league win over Lake Waccamaw, Chase Bowen had three hits, including a home run an a double, and Tristen Little had three hits, including a triple. Degner Axelberg had two hits.
