An important decision looms, possibly tonight, for naming the new director of the Columbus County Department of Social Services.
DSS is one of the county’s largest departments with 142 employees. The department saw tumultuous times under former director Marva Scott, who has moved on to take a similar position in Edgecombe County.
DSS deserves the best director possible in its job search. The decision does not have to be an expedient one. Interim director Mary Thompson has announced her intention to retire June 30, but there’s no reason another interim director couldn’t be found if the DSS board can’t find a candidate of its liking.
Maybe that candidate is one of the finalists. If so, great, but there should be no rush to fill the position, even if DSS board chairman and County Commissioner Amon McKenzie’s term ends June 30.
