OBITUARIES

HELEN HARDIE STANLEY
CAMPBELL


WHITEVILLE -- Helen Hardie Stanley Campbell, 80, passed away Saturday, June 23, 2007, at home. She was born June 11, 1927 in Columbus County, N.C., daughter of the late E.N. and Jessie Hardie. She was preceded in death by her first husband, R. Brooks Stanley.

Helen started her family in the Mollie community where one of her fondest memories was writing and directing Sweet Home Baptist Church’s first Christmas play. After moving to Whiteville in 1965, she became active in various activities. Education was very important to her, and she served on the Whiteville School Board for several years. She was a member of First Baptist Church. Helen was affiliated with Gore’s Quality Shop in downtown Whiteville for many years as a buyer, interior decorator and floral designer.

Helen was a loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Her greatest hobby was her family and she worked to make every holiday and birthday a very special and memorable event. She was a talented gardener; her yard was spectacular with blooms every spring and summer. Helen possessed a very warm and generous heart; she truly believed it was better to give than receive.

She is survived by her husband, Richard Alec Campbell; her sons, Gregory Brooks Stanley (Evelyn) of Wilmington, and Tony Craig Stanley of Whiteville; her daughters, Dr. Paula Helen Stanley of Radford, Va. and Treva Stanley Whitesell (Reed) of Wilmington; her two beloved grandsons, Jim Whitesell and Joe Whitesell of Wilmington; two sisters, Marguerite Houston (Allen) of Wilmington, and Peggy Allman (Larry) of Fayetteville; one brother, Gene Hardie of Robertsdale, Ala.; three stepsons, Michael Campbell (Joan) of Aberdeen, Md., Richard Campbell (Mishell) and Daniel Campbell, all of Carrollton, Ga.; one stepdaughter, Becki Gutierrez of Houston, Texas; and many special nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at Peacocks in the Pines with visitation Tuesday, June 26 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. and funeral services Wednesday, June 27 at 2 p.m. Entombment will be in Whiteville Memorial Cemetery. A Peacock Service, Whiteville.

 

GEORGE LATTIMORE


RALEIGH -- George Lattimore died peacefully at home on June 22, 2007 at age 82, following a decade of declining health. Born to George F. Lattimore Sr. and Evelyn Ann White Lattimore in Smithfield, he was their only child. They moved to King’s Mountain where he began school and graduated King’s Mountain High School and went on to Duke University in 1942.

He served his country as a medic in the United States Navy’s V-12 program and was stationed with the Marines in the South Pacific. Remarkably, he survived a typhoon by tying himself to the base of a palm tree. Thereafter, he returned to graduate from Duke with a B.S. degree in chemistry in 1947.

He entered the textile industry as an industrial engineer and then married Helen Geneva Turner of Fair Bluff. They settled in Greensboro and had two sons before moving to Raleigh in 1955 where they have lived ever since.

Under the guidance of his uncle R. Shelton White, he began a real estate business of his own, in Raleigh. Over five decades, his one-man operation included property development, real estate and insurance sales.
George was a member of Edenton Street United Methodist Church.

George is survived by his wife of 56 years, his two sons, George M. Lattimore and his wife Erin Duffie Lattimore of Austin, Texas, W. Tim Lattimore and his wife Dr. Pax Lattimore of Raleigh. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, David M. Lattimore and his wife Theresa Brown Lattimore of Greensboro, Hannah A. Lattimore of North Haven, Conn., Jonathan A. Lattimore of Pope Air Force Base in Fayetteville, Kathryn P. Lattimore of Durham, Kristen A. Lattimore of Raleigh, George W. Lattimore of Austin, Texas and Wyeth Lattimore of Raleigh.
George was preceded in death by his grandson, Joseph Daniel Lattimore.

His family wishes to thank Arlene Lucas, Janice James and Maranda Mason, his care-givers, and to thank Brenda Overton of his staff.

Special thanks to his valued special assistant of over 40 years, Christine Floyd and her husband Gaston Floyd, a special friend.

Final rites were held Monday, June 25, at Edenton Street United Methodist Church followed by a private family burial at Historic Oakwood Cemetery. Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, St. Mary Street, Raleigh handled the arrangements.

ANGUS HOOD MONDS


WHITEVILLE -- Angus Hood Monds, 76, died Saturday, June 23, 2007, in Columbus Regional Healthcare System. He was born May 17, 1931 in Harnett County, the son of the late Robert Mitchell Monds and Elma Barefoot Monds.

Monds was the retired owner and operator of Whiteville Finance Company. He was a member of the Whiteville Lions Club, Whiteville Rescue Unit and American Legion. He was a former deacon at Westminster Presbyterian Church. He was a graduate at Campbell College where he played baseball and attended East Carolina University.
Monds enjoyed hunting and fishing and was well known in the community for organizing fundraisers and cookouts, specializing in chicken bogs and barbecues.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Monday (today), June 25, at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Joshua Bower officiating. Interment will follow in Whiteville Memorial Cemetery. A Peacock Service of Whiteville.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Betty Russell Monds; a son, Robert Monds and wife, Hannah of Wilmington; two daughters, Karen Monds Hatch and husband, Palmer of Fuquay-Varina and Julie Monds Ward and husband, Dan of Clarkton; a sister, Faye Monds Upchurch of Dunn; six grandchildren, Jessica Loburk, Victoria Hatch, Alston Hatch, Emily Ward, Abby Ward and Elizabeth Monds; and a great-grandchild, Tyler Loburk.

BOBBY MORRIS LONG


NAKINA -- Bobby Morris Long, 69, died Thursday, June 14, 2007, at Premier Living, Lake Waccamaw. He was born in Columbus County, the son of the late Seewall Long and Susie Eunice Stocks Long.

Final rites were held Sunday, June 17, at Dulah Baptist Church with the Rev. Ragsdale Allsbrook officiating. Interment followed in Dulah Cemetery, Tabor City. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.

Survivors include three sons, Bobby Long Jr. and Chris Long, both of Texas; and Randy Long of Whiteville; a brother, Thelton Long of Nakina; two sisters, Junella Faulk of Tabor City, and Rita Gail Cartrette of Nakina; and four grandchildren.

 

HELEN CATHERINE DAWSON


BALTIMORE, Md. -- Helen Catherine Dawson, 70, died Tuesday, June 19, 2007, at Fredrick Villa Nursing Home.

Final rites were held on Saturday, June 23 at St. Mary Baptist Church, Evergreen. Burial followed in Evergreen Community Cemetery. D&A Funeral Home of Chadbourn handled the arrangements.

Survivors include five sisters, Juanita Gainey, Inez Lenn and Iona Apple, all of Evergreen, Geraldine Whittaker and Shirley Evans, both of Whiteville; two brothers, Junior Dawson of Whiteville, and Thomas A. Dawson of Evergreen; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

 

CEPHAS ALLEN DUNCAN


BOLTON -- Cephas Allen Duncan, 87, died Friday, June 22, 2007, at Premier Living, Lake Waccamaw. He was a veteran of the United States Army.

Final rites will be held at noon Tuesday, June 26, at Walter’s Chapel AME Zion Church. Burial will follow in the Restwell Cemetery #1. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Viewing will be at the funeral home on Monday (today) from noon until 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 9-10 a.m. Viewing will be at the church Tuesday from 11 a.m. until noon and again following the service.

 

ERNEST McMILLAN


ST. PAULS -- Ernest McMillan, 53, died Tuesday, June 19, 2007, at Cape Fear Valley Medical, Fayetteville.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 25, at Pleasant Grove Missionary Church with the Rev. Phillips Marks officiating. Colvin Funeral Home of Lumberton is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his mother, Jeanette McMillan-Sinclair of Lumberton; his wife, Lisa L. McMillan of St. Pauls; four daughters, Tamika P. McMillan and Angel C. McMillian, both of St. Pauls, Jennette D. McMillan and Tonya McMillan-Orlega, both of Atlanta, Ga.; four sisters, Helena Stephens, Loretta Locklear, and Barbara Logan, all of Lumberton, and Wanda Harris of Queens, N.Y.
