BLADENBORO -- Wayne W. “Dick” McPherson, 66, entered into eternal rest Saturday, June 2, 2007. He was born in Columbus County to Sam and Flora McPherson. He was a well-known farmer. He was predeceased by his parents and his wife, Jane McPherson.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 5, at West Bladenboro Baptist Church with the Reverends Boyd Britt and Bert Young officiating. Burial will follow in Union Valley Cemetery, Smyrna Road, Whiteville. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include three sons, Michael Wayne McPherson and wife, Martha of Bladenboro, Christopher Mark McPherson and wife, Tina of Chadbourn, and David Glenn McPherson and wife, Betty Anne of Bladenboro; two sisters, Hazel Bennett of Columbia, S.C., and Derotha Fink of Fayetteville; six grandchildren, Summer, Sam, Jack, Ian, Tyler, and Meredith; and a best friend, Joann Kinlaw.
Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home on Monday, June 4 (tonight).

FAIR BLUFF -- Lizzie Faye Montgomery, 63, died Wednesday, May 30, 2007, at New Hanover Regional Hospital, Wilmington.
Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, June 4, at Piney Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Nichols, S.C. with the Rev. Thurman Gerald officiating. Burial will follow in the George Cemetery, Whiteville. S&L Funeral Home of Fair Bluff is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include her husband, Harry Montgomery of Vance, S.C.; her mother, Mary Lizzie George of Fair Bluff; two sons, Ricky George and Rodney Montgomery; a daughter, Pamela Montgomery; a god-daughter, Fantazya Moore; a god-son, Maquise Ratliff; four sisters, Queenie Ballard of Rochester, N.Y., Glendora Goerge and Wanda Campbell, both of Fair Bluff, and Diane Lee of Green Sea, S.C.; four brothers, Forrest George of Loris, S.C., Lorenzo George of Mt. Airy, Leon George of Dobson, and Junior George of Fair Bluff; and two grandchildren.
BALTIMORE, Md. -- Vivian Gowens Ryan, 64, formerly of Cerro Gordo, died Thursday, May 31, 2007, at Johns Hopkins Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Owen and Etta Gowans of Cerro Gordo.
Final rites will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 6, at Wayland Baptist Church, 3200 Garrison Boulevard, Baltimore, with Dr. Hoffman F. Brown III officiating. Burial will follow on Thursday morning in Baltimore. A service of James A. Morton & Sons Funeral Home of Baltimore, Md. is handling the arragements.
Survivors include her husband, Robert Ryan; a daughter, April Ryan James of Randallstown, Md.; a son, Robert Ryan Jr. of Baltimore; seven sisters, Jewel Ford, Margaret Franklin, and Harriet McDowell, all of Cerro Gordo, Pearl McGill, Valdina Brown, and Christine Richburg, all of Baltimore, and Ida Gowans-Beasley of Owing Mills, Md.; four brothers, Billy Gowans of Sicklerville, N.J., Paul Gowans of Philadelphia, Pa., James Thomas Gowans of Baltimore, and Raymond Gowans of Cerro Gordo.

FAIR BLUFF -- Richard Kenneth Meares, 27, died Saturday, June 2, at Duke University Medical Center of Durham. Meares was born in Columbus County and graduated with honors, in 1999 from West Columbus High School.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 5, at Porter Swamp Baptist Church with Reverends Terry Dove and Tim Moore officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Meares Funeral Home of Fair Bluff will handled the arrangements.
Survivors include his parents, James Kenneth and Alice Faye Russ Meares of Fair Bluff; a sister, Sherry Lynn M. Gunter and her husband Billy of Elizabethtown; and three nieces, Hillary Gunter, Alice Gunter and Kacey Gunter.

FAIR BLUFF -- Mattie Jacobs Bass, 84, died Thursday, May 31, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare. She was born in Fair Bluff the daughter of the late Lewis and Dora Caulder Jacobs. She was preceded in death by two sons, Robert Lee Bass and Billy William Bass and a daughter, Annie Mae Ward.

Survivors include two daughters, Mattie “Virginia” Nobles of Fair Bluff and Doretha Edwards of Little River, S.C.; a son, Albert Alford Bass Jr. of Ticayune, Miss.; and a sister, Lura Rankins of Mt. Holly; 17 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandchild.
WILMINGTON -- Betty Blanks died Monday, May 28, 2007 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
Final rites were held Friday, June 1, at Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church. Burial followed in the Evergreen Cemetery. Adkins-Drain Funeral Service of Wilmington handled the arrangements.
WHITEVILLE -- Kathrine Perry Hilburn, 97, died Saturday, June 2, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare.

ABBOTTSBURG -- Naomi Edwards Ransom, 92, died Friday, June 1, 2007, at her residence. She was the daughter of the late Charlie and Fannie Hester Edwards. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cooper Ransom and a son, Bruce Ransom. She was a lifetime member of Mt. Calvary Original Freewill Baptist Church.
Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, June 4 (today), at Mt. Calvary Original Freewill Baptist Church with Reverends Garland Suggs, Arthur Smith, and Vernon Adams officiating. Burial will follow in the Williams Cemetery, Mt. Calvary community. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include a daughter, Evelyn B. Youngerman of Whiteville; five sons, Robert Ransom of Castle Hayne, Fredrick Ransom of Albany, Ga., Lewis C. Ransom Jr. of Whiteville, Richard Ransom of Raleigh, and Herman Bullard of Charlotte; 21 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
LEXINGTON -- Billy Travis Hayes, died Saturday, June 2, 2007, at his home after declining health of six months. He was born in Columbus County to Solomon Dew Hayes and Eula Worley Hayes. He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife Minnie McGehee Hayes and a daughter, Sandra Leigh Hayes.
Hayes was a retired truck driver with Roy Widener Trucking and a member of Macedonia United Methodist Church. A veteran of the United States Army and the National Guard, member of Lexington Memorial Lodge 473, and a Scottish and York Rite Mason.
Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, June 5, at Davidson Funeral Home Lexington Chapel, conducted by Rev. Clyde Akers. Burial will follow in Macedonia United Methodist Church Cemetery with Masonic graveside rites by Lexington Memorial Lodge Number 473. Davidson Funeral Home of Lexington is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Leonard Hayes of the home; stepdaughters, Sandra Sneed, and Julie Mae Bowden, both of Lexington; stepson, Bobby Dale Sutton of Lexington; brothers, Jerry Hayes of Midway and Buddy Hayes of Lexington; sisters, Margaret Hayes Watts and Jackie Shelley, both of Fair Bluff, Nancy Hayes Hall and Betty Hayes Milam, both of Lexington, and Mary Lee Blythe of Winson-Salem; seven step-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.

‘BECKY’ THOMPSON
BLADENBORO -- Dorothy Rebecca “Becky” Thompson, 79, died Thursday, May 31, 2007, at her home.
Thompson was a member of Oak Grove Original Freewill Baptist Church. She was married to Boyd G. Crisp in 1945 and was also married to Ashley Deaver, both preceded her in death. On March 13, 1991 she married Jack Thompson, he preceded her in death on May 9, 2006.
Final rites were held Sunday, June 3, at Oak Grove Original Freewill Baptist Church with the Rev. Larry Greenwood officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown handled the arrangements.
Survivors include two sons, Bobby Crisp of Fayetteville and Donald Crisp of Salvista, Ky.; two daughters, Diane Godwin of Fayetteville and Connie Sedam of Greenwood, Ind.; two brothers, Norwood Bollinger of Kelly and Nelson Bollinger of Bladenboro; two sisters, Winona Davis of Texas and Maynell Fincham of Virginia; three stepchildren, Bonnie Thompson of Supply, Patricia Edge of White Oak, and Jack Arnold Thompson of Evergreen; seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and several step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

DR. GEORGE FRANKLIN
COX JR., MD
MARION, S.C. -- Dr. George Franklin Cox Jr., Md., 74, husband of Jenny Wall Gibson Cox, died Wednesday, May 23, 2007, at Grand Strand Medical Center, Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Dr. Cox was born March 12, 1933, in Pamplico, a son of the late George Franklin Cox and the late Addie Finklea Cox. He practiced medicine in Fair Bluff during the 1960s and 70s and was considered to be one of the best diagnosticians in the area. He was a graduate of The Citadel and graduated from the Medical University of South Carolina in 1958. He served in the United States. Air Force Reserves. Dr. Cox was a member of Marion Baptist Church.
Final rites were held Saturday, May 26, at Marion Baptist Church with the Reverends Daniel Inabinet and Denley Caughman officiating. Burial followed in Terrell’s Bay Cemetery. Smith-Collins Funeral Home of Marion, S.C. handled the arrangements.
Survivors include other than his wife of the home are three sons, Leo Cameron “Cam” Cox of Marion, Coleman Cox of Charlotte, and Frank Cox of Boone; two daughters, Nancy Cochrane of Charlotte and Lisa Jameson of Campobello, S.C.; and six grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Larry Cox.
LAKE WACCAMAW Stuart McGuire Thomson, 94, died in his home Sunday, June 3, 2007. The son of Dr. and Mrs. James Randolph Thomson, he was the last surviving child of the doctor and his family who moved to the lake in the early 1900s. Thomson was predeceased by his wife Sarah McLean Thomson in November.
He was an engineer and graduated from N.C. State University. He established a TV sales and service business in Washington, N.C., in the 1950s, and moved back to the lake following his retirement.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday June 5, at the Lake Waccamaw Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in the Hillcrest Cemetery at Lake Waccamaw. McKenzie Mortuary is handling arrangements.
Survivors include a son, Stuart M. Thomson Jr. of Washington; a daughter, Sarah T. High of Lake Waccamaw; and two grandchildren.
Visitation will be at the home along Lake Shore Drive from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

STEPHENSON
WHITEVILLE -- Dorothy Claire Perry Stephenson, 80, formerly of Pascoag, R.I., died Friday, June 1, 2007, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Wilmington. She was the widow of Raymond Thomas Stephenson and the daughter of the late Arthur Eli and Eva Mary Chausee’ Perry.
Stephenson taught in the Rhode Island and Florida schools for 30 years and during World War II served in the Cadet Nurse Corps.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 9, at Mishop Springs United Methodist Church, Whiteville with Rev. Robert Rattz officiating. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include three daughters, Deborah S. Carter of Whiteville, Bonnie S. Bailey of Pascoag, R.I., and Ann Maire S. Dubey of Clove, S.C.; a sister, Constance B. Pratt of Coventry, R.I.; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at 3243 Pine Log Road, Whiteville.
LELAND -- Aloria Skipper Jones Thompson, 97, died at Brunswick Cove Nursing Home. She was the daughter of the late Jasper Skipper and Martha Caroline Lashley. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Thompson and sons, Hubert Jones, Willie Jones and Morris Jones.
Final rites were held Wednesday, May 30, at McKenzie Mortuary Chapel with Dr. Tommy Bryson officiating. Burial followed in the Thompson Family Cemetery. McKenzie Mortuary of Whiteville handled the arrangements.
Survivors include four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 6, at First St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church in Whiteville with Elder Frank Mason officiating. Burial will follow in the Dogwood Cemetery in Rowland. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include four daughters, Clara Norton of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Margaret Godfrey and Minnie Godfrey of Whiteville, and Marjorie Campbell of Chadbourn; three sons, Willie Melvin Godfrey Jr. of Durham, Larry Godfrey of Chadbourn, and Terry Godfrey of Greensboro; three sisters, Mary McLean of Whiteville, Helen Collins of Elizabethtown, and Flora Norton of Lumberton; two brothers, Henry Norton of Chadbourn and Carson Hunt of Lumberton.
Viewing will be at the funeral home on Tuesday from noon until 8 p.m. and Wednesday from 9 a.m. until noon. Viewing will be at the church Wednesday following the service.

CHADBOURN -- Madeline Ursel Gurkin Yates, 85, died Sunday, June 3, 2007, at Highsmith-Rainey Hospital in Fayetteville. She was the widow of Raymond W. Yates Sr. and the daughter of the late Otis Cecil and Nancy W. Gurkin.

Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Dove of Chadbourn and Mary Yates of Ocean Isle Beach; a son, Raymond W. Yates Jr. of Chadbourn; sister, Hope Campbell of Fayetteville; brothers, Clyde Gurkin of San Antonio, Texas, Cecil Gurkin of Whiteville, and Earl “Brownie” Gurkin of Western Prong; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
