Optimist Dixie Youth Baseball Tournament to open tonight

The Whiteville Optimist Dixie Youth Baseball League will open its post-season tournament tonight at Optimist Park.

All games in major and minor league brackets will be played on Harritan Field.

Major-league action will get underway tonight at 6 with third-seed Whiteville Chiropractic taking on sixth-seeded Sunshine Cleaners. At 7:30, fourth-seeded Sampson Bladen Oil will go against fifth-seeded Swing Away.

Regular-season champion News Reporter and runnerup BB&T have first-round byes in the six-team major-league bracket.

Play in the six-team minor league bracket will open Tuesday at 6 p.m., with third-seeded BB&T Phone 24 squaring off with sixth-seeded Carolina Respiratory. At 7:30, fourth-seeded Best Western will go against fifth-seeded Civitans.

Regular-season champion Carquest and runnerup Cokley Insurance have opening-round byes.

Semifinal play in the major league bracket will be held Thursday with News Reporter taking on Monday’s Sampson-Bladen Oil - Swing Away winner at 6 p.m. BB&T will tangle with Monday’s Whiteville Chiropractic-Sunshine Cleaners Wednesday in the 7:30 game.

Minor league semifinals are scheduled for Friday with Carquest going against the Tuesday’s Best Western-Civitans winner at 6 p.m., and Cokley Insurance taking the field against Tuesday’s BB&T Phone 24-Carolina Respiratory winner at 7:30.

Tournament championship games will be played Monday night, June 11, with the minor league title game set for 6 and the major-league final set for 7:30.

BB&T is the defending major-league tournament champion and BB&T Phone 24 is the defending minor-league tournament champion.

The Whiteville Optimist Dixie Youth League was formed in 1970, making it one of the oldest Dixie Youth Baseball franchises in North Carolina.
