Hazardous air
Whiteville Fire Chief John Cook, lower right, talks with three Whiteville firefighters on the loading dock of the McNeill Plaza IGA Monday evening. Someone in the store, possibly unattended children, splashed Pine-Sol, Clorox and other chemicals into a restroom, producing noxious fumes that burned the eyes and noses of store employees and customers. Assisted by Whiteville Rescue and Whiteville police, the fire department used full hazardous materials precautions and removed the chemicals. See story page 5-A.
