OBITUARIES

JOSEPH W. GRIFFIN

WHITEVILLE -- Joseph Whidbey Griffin, 81, died Friday, Feb. 23, 2007, at Shoreland Healthcare. He was the son of the late John R. Griffin and Clara Moore Griffin.

Griffin was a member of the Whiteville United Methodist Church. He served in the United States Navy during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was a retired mail carrier.

Final rites were held Monday, Feb. 26, at Whiteville United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Benson officiating. Burial followed in the Whiteville Memorial Cemetery. McKenzie Mortuary of Whiteville handled the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Lois Turner Griffin; two daughters, Phyllis G. Merritt and Sue G. Lennon and husband John Moore Lennon, all of Whiteville; a brother, John R. Griffin Jr. of Maitland, Fla.; a sister, Nell Campbell of Charlotte; an uncle, Bill Moore of Elizabeth City; an aunt, Faye Frink of Charlotte and two grandchildren, Laura Beth Merritt and Grant Merritt both of Whiteville.

Pallbearers were James Simmons, Roger Hammond, Van Underwood, Joey Benton, Lloyd Lennon, and Gene Worthington.

Memorials may be made to the Whiteville United Methodist Church Building Fund.

VIOLET ‘TEE’ DURRETTE GUNTER

CLARENDON – Violet “Tee” Durrette Gunter, 84, died Sunday, Feb. 25, 2007, at her residence after a long illness. She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman Gunter and a son, Walter “Sammy” Durrette.

The family will receive friends at Lynn Hill Baptist Church of Whiteville on Sunday, March 4, at 2 p.m.

Survivors include five daughters, Jackie Poarch of Chester, Va., Barbara Soles of Clarendon, Blanche Bland and Brenda Diane Needham, both of Chesterfield, Va.; and Dolly Fentress of Juno Beach, Fla.; and 18 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

REVEREND C. RAY JUSTICE

WILMINGTON -- The Reverend C. Ray Justice, 68, of Wilmington passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 28 at the Hospice Care Center in Wilmington.

He was born in Madison County, N.C. on May 7, 1938 to the late Charley Breckenridge Justice and Leona Webb Justice.

Rev. Justice served as pastor at Trinity Baptist Church in Whiteville from 1973 to 1988.

He is survived by his wife, Polly Reese Justice, children, Crystal Justice, Tim Justice and Phil Justice, all of Greenville, S.C., Kimberly Furtado of Wilmington; and six grandchildren.

Visitation for family and friends will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, March 2, at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel, 1617 Market St., Wilmington.

A celebration of life ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 3, at Pine Valley Baptist Church, 3940 Shipyard Blvd., Wilmington. Interment will be in Oakdale Cemetery in Wilmington.

SHIRLEY W. MEADE

BRENHAM, TEXAS --Shirley Madeline Wright Meade, 84 died Feb. 24, 2007 at her residence. She was born March 7, 1922 in Springfield, Mass., to Fred and Valentine Wright.

Survivors include her son Charles McQuillan of Long Branch, N.J., daughter Patricia Neveux of Chappell Hill, Texas, stepson Irving Jr. of Clairmont, N.H., and former daughter-in-law Jean Cross Burney of Clarkton, N.C. She had six grandchildren, including Brian Meade of Massachusetts and Kelly Meade Evans of Clarkton, and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and sister Constance Wright, and granddaughter Joan Meade Pait.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

MIRIAM FLORINE GARRISON

CUMMING, Ga. – Miriam Florine Garrison, 81, formerly of Columbus County and Horry County, S.C., died Saturday, Feb. 24, 2007, at her residence. She is preceded in death by her parents, Hampton and Samantha Buffkin; a son, Ronnie Buffkin; and husband, Thomas Eldred Buffkin.

Garrison was an active member of Cumming First United Methodist Church and enjoyed the Forsyth County Senior Center. She had resided in Cumming for the last 15 years.

A memorial service was held Tuesday, Feb. 27 at Cumming First United Methodist Church. McDonald and Son Funeral Home of Cumming, Ga. handled the arrangements.

Survivors include her husband, Henry Garrison of Cumming; sons, Thomas Allan Buffkin of Goldsboro, N.C., Bobby Dale Buffkin of Evans, Ga., Timothy Eldred Buffkin of Flowery Branch, Ga.; a stepdaughter, Susan Wilcox of Cumming; a stepson, Rhett Garrison of Jacksonville, Fla.; three sisters; a brother; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made in memory of Garrison to either the Forsyth County Senior Center or Cumming First United Methodist Church Music Department, Canton Highway, Cumming, Ga. 30040.

ANTHONY MALCOLM EVANS

CHADBOURN – Anthony Malcolm Evans, 46, died Sunday, Feb. 25, 2007, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington.

Final rites will be held Saturday, March 3, at 1 p.m. at Sandy Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Fair Bluff with the Rev. Thomas Register and Rev. Charles R. Parker presiding. Burial will follow in the Butler Branch Community Cemetery in Fair Bluff. S&L Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Fair Bluff is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Paula Dean Brown Evans of the home; two daughters, Charmine Elaine Evans and Ashley Marie Evans of the home; one son, Anthony Malcolm Evans Jr. of the home; his father, Joe Barden (J.B.) Evans and step-mother, Mary Hammonds Evans of Fair Bluff; five sisters, Celeste Lawrence of Hillside, N.J., Larue Swanson of Bridgeport, Conn., Gwendolyn Gardner of Richmond, Calif., Debra Evans Epps of Whiteville and Natalie Evans of New Bergen, N.J.; two brothers, Kenneth Anderson of Tampa, Fla. and Rocky Evans of Plainfield, N.J.

Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, March 2 at S&L Funeral Home at 810 Conway Road in Fair Bluff.

The family will receive friends at the home at 5038 Andrew Jackson Highway in Chadbourn.

ELSIE MARGARET POPE

HALLSBORO – Elsie Margaret Pope, 79 of Hallsboro died Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2007 at Columbus Regional HealthCare.

Pope was the daughter of the late Vance Roland Pope and Earlie Wood Pope and was preceded in death by two sisters, Earlie Aline Pope and Marie Dudley, both of Hallsboro and one brother, Mikey Pope of Hallsboro.

She was a member of Hallsboro Baptist Church.
Final rites will be held Friday, March 2, at 2 p.m. at the McKenzie Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Ed Vogt officiating. Burial will follow in the Pierce Cemetery.

Visitation will be Thursday, March 1, at McKenzie Mortuary from 7:00-8:30 p.m.
