Brown taking football talents to Charleston Southern

After two seasons as a starting defensive back for the Garden City Community College Broncbusters of Kansas, former Whiteville High athlete Dee Brown is now a member of the Charleston Southern University football team.

The 5-foot-11, 175-pound Brown signed with the Buccaneers prior to the start of the spring semester as a wide receiver.

Brown was a standout in football, basketball and track at Whiteville High before graduating in 2004. He was the 2004 recipient of the Jiggs Powers Memorial Award as Columbus County’s Most Outstanding Athlete.

Brown led Garden City in pass interceptions this past season with three as the ‘Busters posted a 6-4 season record in highly competitive Region 6 of the National Junior College Athletic Association. It was a big transition from southeastern North Carolina to the prairies of western Kansas, but Brown made the most of his junior college experience and earned an opportunity to play for a four-year program.

Charleston Southern is a member of the Big South (NCAA Division I-AA) Conference. Coach Jay Mills’ Buccaneers compiled a 9-2 record last fall as they were led by All-American wide receiver Maurice Price. The Bucs held a 9-0 record before closing the season with losses to Coastal Carolina and Liberty.

Price has decided to forego his senior season at Charleston Southern and to the NFL draft. Brown, who has been timed at 4.3 seconds in the 40-yard dash, is one of the recruits that CSU is hoping can help fill the shoes of Price.

At Whiteville High School, Brown earned all-conference and all-county honors in three sports. He placed third in the state long jump at the state 2A track and field finals in 2004, and also played in the 2004 North Carolina East-West High School All-Star Football Game in Greensboro.
