WHITEVILLE Dolly Catherine Rackley, 77, formerly of Sampson County, died Thursday, March 8, 2007, at Liberty Commons Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Rackley is a native of Sampson County, and the daughter of the late Joseph Rackley and Bessie Thornton Rackley. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Louise Rackley Peterson, Geneva Rackley, and two infant brothers.
She was a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church in Faison and also attended the Joy Class at Trinity Baptist Church in Whiteville for many years before declining health.
Final rites were held Saturday, March 10, at Crumpler-Honeycutt Funeral Home in Clinton with the Rev. Kerry Peeler officiating. Burial followed in the Piney Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Faison. Crumpler-Honeycutt of Clinton handled the arrangements.
Survivors include two nieces, Virginia Peterson Greer and husband Jimmy and Betty Jo Peterson Spivey and husband Jimmy, all of Whiteville; two great-nieces, Tonya Spivey Schoolcraft and husband Jason of Whiteville and Suzanne Greer Holmes and husband Jason of Garner; two great-nephews Walt Greer and wife Danielle of New Bern and Randy Spivey and wife Sylvia of Houston, Texas; three great-great-nephews, Zachary and Lance Spivey and Cooper Greer.

HARTSELLE, Ala. Lucille King, 87, formerly of Hallsboro, died March 7, 2007, in Decatur, Ala. She was born Feb. 27, 1920 in Duplin County, the daughter of the late John Richard Summerlin and Minnie Lee Pate.
King was formerly employed with Universal Precision Company in Chicago, Ill.
Graveside rites were held Sunday, March 11, at Lake Waccamaw Hillcrest Cemetery with Deacon Jerry Lunsford officiating. Peacock’s Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.
Survivors include her husband, Lee King; four daughters, Gloria Faye Richards of Wilmington, Marie Stagg of Chicago, Ill., Tricia Pacini of Portland, Ore., and Anita Rios of Mesa, Ariz.; five grandchildren and a great-grandson.
King was preceded in death by sisters, Virginia Summerlin Maultsby and Azalea Summerlin Stone; brothers, David Bryant Summerlin, William Waitus Summerlin and John Cameron Summerlin.
WHITEVILLE Anthony Jaleel Bryant, 7-month-old son of Anthony Bryant and Evelyn Jordan, died Tuesday, March 6 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare.
Final rites were held Saturday, March 10, at the Peoples Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Antonio Burroughs officiating. Burial followed in Campground Cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.
Survivors include other than his parents, two brothers, Raeqwon Bryant and LaRussell Bryant of the home; maternal grandmother, Willie Mae Jordan of Hallsboro; and parternal grandmother, Lela Bryant of Whiteville.
WHITEVILLE Norwood Evans, 83, died Saturday, March 10, 2007, at Bladen County Hospital, Elizabethtown. He was the son of the late Memory D. and Alvania Pierce Evans.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 13, at Poley Bridge Baptist Church with the Rev. Glenn Lane officiating. Burial will follow in the New Britton Baptist Church Cemetery, Ash. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Vada Aline Hardwick Evans of the home.
Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. Monday (tonight) at the funeral home.

CHADBOURN Dianda Marie Blanchard Meares, 34, died Friday, March 9, 2007.

TABOR CITY Jake Watts, 79, died Wednesday, March 7, 2007, at Sunbridge Nursing Home, Elizabethtown. He was the son of the late Wyche Watts and Cora Hooks.
Graveside services were held Saturday, March 10, at Forest Lawn Cemetery with Rev. Holland Norris officiating. McKenzie Mortuary of Whiteville handled the arrangements.
Survivors include a son, Jackie Watts of Whiteville; a daughter, Brenda Snell of Tabor City; a stepson, Gary Suggs of Chadbourn; two stepbrothers, Buddy Watts of Lumberton, and Fred Watts of Fayetteville; three stepsisters, Dale Davis and Betty Campbell, both of Fayetteville, and Janette Faulk of St. Pauls; nine grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

WHITEVILLE Faye St. George, 79, died Friday, March 9, 2007, at UNC Memorial Hospital, Chapel Hill. She was born in Sampson County, the daughter of the late Neil Angus Morrison and Ometa Lewis Morrison.
St. George was a retired elementary school teacher having taught at Williams Township School. She was a member of Whiteville United Methodist Church.
Memorial service was conducted Sunday, March 11, at Whiteville United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Benson officiating. Peacock’s Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.
Survivors include her husband, John D. St. George; two sons, J. Dan St. George of Marblehead, Mass. and Eddie St. George of Savannah, Ga.; two daughters, Barbara St. George Mayes of Goldsboro and Ometa St. George Claypole of Cartersville, Ga.; sisters, Peggy Parker of Raleigh and Lucy Williams of Wilmington; nine grandchldren, and two great-grandchildren.
EVERGREEN Quinton Taft Phillips, 15, died Wednesday, March 7, 2007, from injuries received from an auto accident.
Phillips was a freshman at West Columbus High School in Cerro Gordo.
Final rites were conducted Saturday, March 10, at Boardman Baptist Church with the Reverends Hal Stephens, Jerry Lowery and Rodney Evers officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn handled the arrangements.
Survivors include his parents, William Taft “Sammy” and Shelia Ann McLamb Phillips of the home; a brother, William Kash Phillips of the home; and his maternal grandmother, Doris Russ McLamb of Bladenboro.
LUMBERTON Margaret B. Connor, 87, formerly of Fairmont, died Saturday, March 10, 2007, at Wesley Pines Retirement Home.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 13, at Floyd Funeral Services Chapel, Fairmont with the Rev. William Gentry officiating. Burial will follow in Floyd Memorial Cemetery, Fairmont. Floyd Funeral Home of Fairmont is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include her husband, Eddie Connor, a daughter, Pattie Nobles; a brother, Lacy “Bud” Barnes; nine grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and 14 great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Monday (tonight) from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
ASH James Edward Chavis Sr., 58, died Friday, March 9, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare. He was born Dec. 7, 1948 in Cheraw, S.C., the son of the late Tommy and May V. Stocks Chavis. He was a member and former deacon of Fellowship Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends at Peacock’s Chapel In The Pines Monday, March 12 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Graveside services will be scheduled in Troxell Cemetery, Strunk, Ky. Peacock’s Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Jewell Ross Chavis; a daughter, Michelle Ann Guin of Ash; a son, James Edward Chavis Jr. of Wapakoneta, Ohio; two brothers, Billy Chavis of Middleville, Mich. and Kent Babson of Orlando, Fla.; a sister, Jennie Inman of Whiteville; and six grandchildren.
CLARKTON Betty Davis Smith, 69, died Friday, March 9, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare. She was the daughter of the late Wesley and Beatrice Davis. She was a waitress.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Monday (today) at Shady Grove Baptist Church, Bladenboro with the Rev. Michael Skinner officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include three sons, Vic Shaw of Clarkton, Glenn Shaw of Bladenboro, and Paul Russ of Florida; a daughter, Debbie Shaw of Raleigh; three brothers, Jack Davis and G.C. Davis, both of Clarkton, and Jerry Davis of Louisiana; three sisters, Juanita Harris of Florida, Pauline Brown and Edna Ransom, both of Whiteville; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

WHITEVILLE Purdie James Vereen, 44, died Friday, March 9, 2007, in Whiteville.
