softball season
with win over WC

The Whiteville High girls softball team made the most of its delayed season start Friday by taking an 8-1 victory over visiting West Columbus.

Amanda Pope and Kim Hathway combined to pitch a two-hitter in the WHS win. Pope had to leave the mound with an injury after pitching the first two innings. Pope and Hathway combined to strike out 11 batters.

Whiteville, which had to postpone its first three scheduled games due to its girls basketball team’s success in the state playoffs, was led at the plate by Ashae Covington, who drove in two runs with a triple and a single. Danielle Cassidy added two hits and two RBI while Olivia Williams drove in a pair of runs with one hit.

Also getting hits for Coach Dudley Revels WHS team were Pope, Nicole Storms and Aerial Smith.

West Columbus pitcher Caroline Newman recorded 12 strikeouts and yielded eight hits
West Columbus will to play host to South Columbus today at 5 p.m., and Whiteville will entertain West Bladen Tuesday at 5.
