Gators defeat
W. Bladen 6-4

DUBLIN - Caleb Andrews pitched a complete-game victory and belted a fifth-inning home run Thursday for the East Columbus Gators as they rallied to a 6-4 high-school baseball decision over the host West Bladen Knights.

East Columbus belted out 13 hits for the day as they put their season record at 4-2. The Gators’ Friday home game with Topsail was rained out.

Coach Karl Bracey’s Gators rallied from a 4-2 deficit by scoring three runs in the fifth inning and one in the sixth.

Forrest Steed had a big day at the plate, getting three hits, including a double, and driving in three runs.

Alex Williamson had two hits, including a double, while Chad Malpass and C.J. Ganus also had two hits each. Demetrice McKelvie had as double and Robert Pierce added an RBI single.

It was the second straight loss for West Bladen, which had opened its season with five straight victories.

Andrews, a lefthander, allowed six hits.

Jonathan Locklear was the losing pitcher for West Bladen with Blake Sykes throw in relief.

East Columbus and West Bladen will meet again on April 9 in the opening round of Jiggs Powers Memorial Baseball Tournament, which will be held this year at South Columbus.

East Columbus will step into Waccamaw 1A-2A Conference action on Tuesday when they visit the Whiteville Wolfpack at 5 p.m., at Legion Stadium.
