WINSTON-SALEM -- Pauline McPherson Curtis, 74, passed away Sunday, March 18, 2007, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Sept. 16, 1932 in Columbus County to Grover and Emma Walton McPherson.
Curtis was preceded in the death by her parents, her husband, and her close friend, John “Slim” Thompson.
She grew up, along with her brother Grover, on their family farm off the Carolina coast. Her childhood near the ocean sparked a lifelong love for summer days spent at the beach and good seafood. For 20 years she worked for the Carolina Telephone Company in Whiteville while raising her daughter, Kathy.
Curtis later relocated to Hopewell, Va. and married Floyd Curtis. There she worked for the Hopewell Oil Company and was manager of the Synthetic Federal Credit Union where she was honored for 21 years of service. In Virginia she was also an active member of the Women of the Moose organization.
In 2003 she moved back to the Carolinas to be closer to her family. After retirement, she enjoyed bridge games with friends and being part of the Hope Valley Garden Club. Curtis attended First Baptist Church where she was a member of the Forerunners class and she also volunteered with the local chapter of Meals on Wheels.
Memorial services were conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 21, at First Baptist Church of Winston-Salem. Salem Funeral & Cremation Service handled the arrangements.
She is survived by her loving daughter, Kathy Gore Crutchfield and husband, Brian of Boone; newlywed granddaughter, Kat Benson and husband, Randy, of Chapel Hill; grandson, Evan Crutchfield of Dillon, Colo.; brother, Grover McPherson and wife, Betty, of Winston-Salem; niece Laura McCaskey and husband, John, of Cornelius; and nephew David McPherson and wife, Vanessa, of Charlotte; as well as the many kind neighbors and friends who cared for her in her time of need.The family will receive friends before the service between 10-10:45 a.m. at the funeral home.

WHITEVILLE -- Catherine H. Creech, 89, of the Western Prong community, died Tuesday, March 20, 2007. She was born Feb. 18, 1918 in Columbus County, the daughter of the late Charlie Evans Heustess and Annie Shipman Heustess. She was the widow of James Roland Creech. She was a member of Western Prong Baptist Church.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 23, at Western Prong Baptist Church with the Reverends Warren Hill and Roy Walker officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Peacock’s Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include three daughters, Ann Creech Chandler of Rupert, Ind., Judy Creech Tyndall and husband, Granger of Swansboro, and Grey Creech Phillips and husband, Jimmy of Whiteville; four sons, Phil Creech and wife, Carolyn of Whiteville, Travis Creech and wife, Sharon of Whiteville, Michael Creech and wife, Jean of Clarkton, Ben Creech and wife Kathy of Whiteville; 23 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren; a special caretaker, Brenda Singleton.
She was preceded in death by brothers, James Ralph, Talbert, and Mallory Heustess; a sister, Elva Heustess; a grandson, David Phillips and a great-grandson, Jonathan Merchant.
Mrs. Creech’s grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday, March 22 (tonight) at Western Prong Baptist Church.

RAYMOND THOMAS STEPHENSON
WHITEVILLE Raymond Thomas Stephenson, 85, formerly of Pascoag, R.I., died Monday, March 19, 2007, at Shoreland Healthcare. He was the son of the late Thomas and Fanny Scotland Stephenson and was a veteran of World War II service in the U.S. Army.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 24, at Mishop Springs United Methodist Church with Rev. Robert Rattz officiating. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Dorothy Claire Perry Stephenson of the home; daughters, Deborah S. Carter of Whiteville, Bonnie S. Bailey of Pascoag, R.I., and Ann Marie Dubey of Clover, S.C.; a brother, Frederick Stephenson of Burlington; a sister, Sibella S. Cree of Pascoag, R.I.; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

CHADBOURN Alverta Estelle Suggs Stover, 78, died Tuesday, March 20, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare. She was the daughter of the late Henry O. and Bertha Lenora Morris Suggs.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 23, at Chadbourn Memorial Cemetery with Rev. Kate Rascoe officiating. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include a brother, Doris M. Suggs of Whiteville; and two grandchildren.
LORIS, S.C. -- Rosa Lee Stroud Kotelly, 84, died Monday, March 19, 2007, at Loris Community Hospital following an illness. Born Oct. 15, 1922 in Green Sea, S.C., she was the widow of Philip George Kotelly and daughter of the late William Bertie Stroud and Rose Anna Strickland Stroud.
She was a homemaker and a member of Cane Branch Baptist Church.
Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, March 23, at Cane Branch Baptist Church with Reverends Darrell Smith and Alvin Jackson officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Nichols, S.C. Hardwick Funeral Home Inc. of Loris, S.C. is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include her two daughters, Rosemary Phipps, and husband, Buster of Loris, S.C., and Rhonda Ready and husband, John of Sterling, Va.; a brother, Robert Clayton Stroud of Rock Hill, S.C.; four sisters, Catherine Dozier of Mullins, S.C., Retha Bellamy of Loris, S.C., Bernice Norris of Tabor City, and Louise Stroud of Bayboro, S.C.; and three grandchildren, Erin and Ashley Phipps, and Emily Ready. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Kotelly was predeceased by six brothers, Von, Ellery, Vernon, Dafus, Honore, and Ceph Stroud.

LAKE WACCAMAW Carolyn Barnes Shanks, 64, died Sunday, March 18, 2007, at Premier Living. She was born in Columbus County, daughter of the late Wilson and Keturah Woodbury Soles.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City will be in charge of the services.
Survivors include a son, Kim Barnes of Clarendon; three brothers, C.W. Harrelson of Tabor City, Franklin Soles of Goose Creek, S.C.; and Tommy Soles of Stillwater, Okla.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
WHITEVILLE Esther B. Long, 88, died Monday, March 19, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare. She was a homemaker.
Final rites will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 24, at St. James AME Church with Rev. J.A. Richburg officiating. Burial will be held in the Campground Cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

LAKE WACCAMAW Barbara Ann Freeman, 44, died on Monday, March 19, 2007, at Ocean Trail Convalescent Center, Southport.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 22, at Sandy Plain Missionary Baptist Church, Clarkton with the Reverends Cleo Williamson and Ronald Campbell officiating. Union Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include five sisters, Lessie Moore, Sylvia Freeman, Celester Antone, Sharon Freeman, and Tonya Moore; three brothers, Willie Freeman, Aaron Freeman and Lonnie Freeman.
Viewing will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. There will be no viewing afterwards.
CHADBOURN Robert Lee Williams Jr., 57, died Thursday, March 15, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare.
Final rites were held Monday, March 19, at the Brunswick-Waccamaw Baptist Association Building in Whiteville with Rev. Gordon Griffin officiating. Burial followed in Mt. Tabor Memorial Gardens, Cerro Gordo. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.
Survivors include two sons, Pastor Robert DeLeon Williams and Rodney Otis Williams, both of Whiteville; his parents, Robert and Mary Williams of Chadbourn; a sister, Hettie Geraldine Smith of Chadbourn; and a brother, Michael C. Williams of Durham.
JOSEPHINE ‘KITTEN’ DOWLESS CONNER
BLADENBORO -- Josephine “Kitten” Dowless Conner, 73, died Friday, March 16, 2007, at Bladen County Hospital, Elizabethtown. She was the daughter of the late William Ben and Jewel C. Dowless and the widow of Roy Lee Conner Sr. She was predeceased by a son, William “Cow Man” Darryl Conner.
Final rites were held Sunday, March 18, 2007, at Bladen Funeral Home with the Rev. Bruce Cannon officiating. Burial followed in the Lewis Cemetery, Bladenboro. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown handled the arrangements.
Survivors include three sons Roy Lee Conner Jr. of Hallsboro, Glenn Conner and Morris Conner, both of Bladenboro; two daughters, Faye Hester and Lori Conner, both of Bladenboro; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
WHITEVILLE James Foster McClain, 91, died Wednesday, March 21, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare.
Arrangements will be announced by Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville.
TABOR CITY Baby Gabriel Lloyd had graveside services on Saturday, March 17, 2007, at the Faulk Family Cemetery in the Dothan community.
Survivors are his parents, Bryan and Elvie Lloyd.
