Gator Trail 50K to be held Saturday at LW State Park

Sixteen runners, ranging in age from 28 to 65 have registered to compete in Saturday’s Gator Trail 50K Run at Lake Waccamaw State Park.

After a two-year lay-off, the Gator Trail Run (approximately 31 miles) has been resumed this year, according to event director Grant Egley and its organization has been aided by the Wilmington Road Runners Club.

The entire run will be held in the confines of the state park, utilizing a six-mile loop, mostly on park trails.

Runners will run the loop five times.

“The trails are dry and in good shape,” said Egley, a longtime ultra--marthoner, who has made Lake Waccamaw his retirement residence. “There are still some areas where the footing might be a little treacherous, but it should be a good course to run on Saturday.”

This year’s run will include former winner Jeff Tieggs of Southern Pines and Top 3 finishers Lonnie Smith of Anderson, Ind., and Steve Leopard of Cary.

The field will also include three female participants.
