LAKE WACCAMAW -- Thurman “Sonny” Bennett, 72, died Tuesday, March 6, 2007. He was born Sept. 3, 1934 in Brunswick County, the son of the late Newman Allen Bennett Sr. and Annie Clara Mintz Bennett.
Bennett retired from International Paper after 42 years. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Lake Waccamaw and a veteran of the United States Navy.
Final rites will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 9, at Peacock’s Chapel In The Pines with Rev. Ray Best officiating. Burial will follow in Lake Waccamaw Hillcrest Cemetery. Peacock Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include two daughters, Selena Bennett of the home and Leslie Bennett Beam of Gastonia; a grandson, Nickolaus M. High of Wilmington; a brother, Robert “Bobby” Bennett of Richland.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Leavy Allen Bennett Sr., Lacy Richmond Bennett, Newman Allen Bennett Jr., Cecil Mace Bennett, Johnathan Lavonne “Capp” Bennett, Dewey Bryant Bennett; sisters, Virginia Bennett Harris and Clara Mae “Bug” Best.
The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Thursday (tonight) at the funeral home.

TABOR CITY Martha G. Floyd, 61, died Thursday, March 1, 2007, at Bladen County Hospital, Elizabethtown. She was a factory worker.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday (today), at Bristol Creek Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Nathaniel Scott officiating. Burial will follow in the Faulk Family Cemetery.
Survivors include a sister, Ruby Givens of the home; and a brother, Elroy Givens of Tabor City.

GALIVANTS FERRY, S.C. Bobbie Suggs Johnson, 70, died Tuesday, March 6, 2007, at McLeod Hospital, Florence, S.C. She was born in Columbus County, the daughter of the late Daniel Edwin Suggs and Atha Malinda Beck Suggs.
Final rites will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday, March 8, at Inman Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverends Kevin Strickland and Rendell Mincey officiating. Graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 9, at Green Sea Cemetery, Green Sea, S.C. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include her husband, Elton Johnson of Galivants Ferry, S.C.; a daughter, Sheri Kern and husband Daniel of Whiteville; a son, Rick Houston of Whiteville; three stepdaughters, Lavanda Naron, Lorie Ann Jones and Essie Renee Lammers, all of Galivants Ferry, S.C.; two grandchildren, Chris Kern and Derek Kern, both of Whiteville; and eight step-grandchildren.

CLARKTON Ernest Smith, 78, died on Friday, March 2, 2007, at Elizabethtown Nursing Center. He was a logger.

EVERGREEN Quinton Taft Phillips, 15, died Wednesday, March 7, 2007, from injuries received from an auto accident.

TAR HEEL James “Martin” Wilson, 79, died Sunday, March 4, 2007, at Woodhaven Nursing Home.
For 42 years, 1948-1990, he owned and operated Wilson’s Grocery Store in Tar Heel and after he retired he went into Home Health and Hospice Care in Robeson County. He was a United States Army veteran.
Final rites were held Wednesday, March 7, at Tar Heel Baptist Church with the Rev. Thomas Willoughby officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown handled the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Ruby B. Wilson of the home; two sons, Donald M. Wilson of Herndon, Va., and Douglas L. Wilson of Dunn; four daughters, Joanne W. Grimsley of Baton Rouge, La., Sandra W. WASHINGTON, D.C. Nancy Cecilia Braxton, 41, died Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2007, at Ft. Worth, Texas.

FRANCES BELLE LONG HINSON
KINSTON Frances Belle Long Hinson, wife of J. Delmas Hinson, died on Friday, March 2, 2007, at Lenoir Memorial Hospital. She was born in Columbus County the daughter of the late John Wilson Long and Edna Mae Long.
Hinson was a graduate of Williams Township School and she received her B.S. degree from East Carolina University at Greenville. She was a teacher in the Whiteville City Schools System for several years.
A private family memorial service will be held at Bethel Cemetery at a later date.
Survivors including her husband are a son, Delmas Hinson Jr.; four sisters, Lucille Long Blackwell of Clarendon, Monnie Long Williams McLamb of Calabash, Nell Long Buffkin of Tabor City, and Gayle Long Ward of Wilmington.
BLADENBORO Wright Burney, 57, died Monday, March 5, 2007.
