OBITUARIES

RALPH LEO EDWARDS

HALLSBORO -- Ralph Leo Edwards, 76, died Saturday, May 19, 2007, at his home.

Edwards was the son of the late Wilson Edwards and Menta Blackwell. He served in the
United States Navy and was a retired magistrate and a 32nd degree Mason and Shriner.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m Tuesday, May 22, at McKenzie Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Slade Skipper officiating. Burial will follow at Lake Waccamaw Hillcrest Cemetery. McKenzie Mortuary of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Pope Edwards of Hallsboro; two sons, Scott Edwards and wife Scarlet of Garner, and Brad Edwards and wife Denise of Whiteville; two grandchildren, Christopher and Tyler Edwards; two sisters, Rachel Turner and husband Frank of Whiteville, and Emma Lou Horne and husband Rudy of Columbia, S.C.; and a brother, Horace Edwards and wife Quessie of Emporia, Va.

Visitation will be held Monday (tonight) from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children in Greenville, S.C.

EDITH RAWLS SIMPSON

DELCO -- Edith Rawls Simpson, 91, died Thursday, May 17, 2007, at Premier Living, Lake Waccamaw. She was the daughter of the late Mike Rawls Sr. and Cennie Elwell Rawls. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward B. Simpson and a sister, Madie Maultsby.

Simpson was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church of Riegelwood.

Final rites were held Saturday, May 19, at Wesley United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bill Altman officiating. Burial followed in the Simpson Family Cemetery. McKenzie Mortuary of Whiteville handled the arrangements.

VERNESSA ANN BROWN

DURHAM -- Vernessa Ann Brown, 34, formerly of Council, died Sunday, May 13, 2007, at Durham Regional Hospital.

Final rites were held Saturday, May 19, at Jerusalem Baptist Church in Council with the Rev. C.R. Parker officiating. Burial followed in the New Hope Community Cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.

Survivors include her father, Bobby Brown of Council; her mother, Mary Edna Brown of Philadelphia, Pa.; and a brother, Bobby R. Brown Jr. of Hillsborough; and paternal grandmother, Annie L. Brown of Council.

ANNE K. LAMBERT

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. -- Anne K. Lambert, 89, died Thursday, May 17, 2007, at her home. She was married to the late William L. Lambert.

Lambert, a homemaker, was originally from Cincinnati, Ohio. She was a graduate of Summit Country Day School where she was Student Body President, and a graduate of the University of Cincinnati. She was also president of her college sorority, Theta Phi Alpha, and remained an active alumna. Before she got macular degeneration, she enjoyed playing bridge with the Trails Bridge Group and completing New York Times crossword puzzles. She also enjoyed watching Jeopardy and was an avid fan of football and professional golf. She was a member of Prince of Peace Church.

A celebration of life for Lambert will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, May 21 at Lohman Ormond Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Richard Grasso officiating. Lohman Funeral Home of Ormond Beach, Fla. is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include her five children, Anne (Charles) Lichtigman of Ormond Beach; Elise (John) Evans of Orland Park, Ill., William C. (Pat) Lambert of Cincinnati, Ohio; Judith (Richard) Bernstein of West Sussex, England; and Beth (Jim) Capella of Morrow, Ohio; and nine grandchildren.

RACHEL HARRISON MILLER

TABOR CITY -- Rachel Harrison Miller, 73, died Wednesday, May 16, 2007, at Loris Community Hospital.

Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 24, at Great Grace Church with Bishop Anthony Gerald officiating. Burial will follow in the Beach Field Cemetery, Brittons Neck, S.C. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include five daughters, Linda Johnson of Rowland, Peggy Miller and Irene Parrett, both of Tabor City, Marie Lilly of Fayetteville, and Betty Miller of Greensboro; a son, Tommy Miller of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; two sisters, Fannie Swinton of Tabor City and Ida Stephens of Fair Bluff.

Viewing will be at the funeral home on Wednesday, May 23 from noon until 8 p.m. and Thursday from 9-11 a.m. Viewing will be at the church Thursday following the service. There will be a wake Wednesday from 7-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

MARILYN ANITA SOLOMON

WHITEVILLE -- Marilyn Anita Solomon, 55, died Friday, May 18, 2007, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Wilmington.

Final rites will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 22, at Rehobeth AME Zion Church, Clarkton with the Rev. Catherine Spaulding officiating. Burial will follow in the Mitchell Field Cemetery, Clarkton. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include a daughter, Prudence Anders of Chapel Hill; her mother, Helen Solomon of Whiteville; two sisters, Karen Long of Chapel Hill and Glenda Spaulding of Clarkton; four brothers, David Solomon of Washington, D.C., Albert Solomon and Spencer Solomon, both of Clarkton, and Charles Solomon of Tar Heel.

Viewing will be held at the funeral home on Monday (today) from noon until 8 p.m. Viewing will be at the church Tuesday from 10-11 a.m., and there will be no viewing after the service.

Friends may visit the family at the home of Helen Solomon, 3961 Tom Sessions Road, Whiteville.

WILLIAM FORMYDUVAL

HALLSBORO -- William FormyDuval, 60, died Sunday, May 20, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by McKenzie Mortuary of Whiteville.

ZEB ‘VANCE’ GARDNER

CLARKTON -- Zeb “Vance” Gardner, 84, died Friday, May 18, 2007, at Bladen County Hospital, Elizabethtown. He was preceded in death by a grandson.

Graveside services were held Sunday, May 20, at Clarkton City Cemetery. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown handled the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Essye Raye Nye Gardner; a daughter, Joann Phillips of Clarkton; a brother, Cecil Gardner of Greensboro; three sisters, Flossie Dennis, Annie Lee Dennis, and Ellen Rumage of Albemarle; three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

LORIS, S.C. -- Judy Gail Faulk, 55, of the Mt. Zion community, died Saturday, May 19, 2007, at her home. She is the daughter of the late Carson Faulk,

Final rites were held Monday, May 21, at Inman Funeral Home Chapel in Tabor City. Burial followed in the Myrtle Green Cemetery. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.

Survivors include a son, Joey Fowler of Loris, S.C.; her mother, Cordelia Hilburn Faulk of Tabor City; three brothers, David and Larry Faulk, both of Tabor City, Terry Faulk of Loris; eight sisters, Barbara Stocks of Little River, S.C., Jane Allison of Fork, S.C., Sue Soles of Ocean Isle, Kathy Faulk, Lisa Faulk, Angie Wickenhagen and Patricia Buchanna, all of Tabor City; and two grandchildren.

VIOLA AUTRY WIGGINS

DUBLIN -- Viola Autry Wiggins, 58, died Saturday, May 19,2007, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Wilmington. She was preceded in death by her parents, Fletcher and Pearl Autry; and a brother, Dewitt Autry.

Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 22, at New Center Baptist Church with Rev. George Langley officiating. Burial will follow at Old Field Cemetery. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include two sons, Carey Wiggins of Winnabow, and Phillip Wiggins of Kinston; five sisters, Mary Jane Howell of Clarkton, Sara White of Whiteville, Melba Atkins of Elizabethtown, Delma Moore of Kinston, and Diann Thompson of Dublin; a brother, Bob Autry of Elizabethtown; and two grandchildren.

MARY STAR FINNESSEY

ROANOKE, Va. -- Mary Star Finnessey, 84, died Thursday, May 17, 2007, at Avante Nursing Home in Roanoke. She was the widow of Arthur Finnessey. Born in Columbus County, she was the daughter of the late Wayman and Nora Gore Cox.

Graveside services were held Sunday, May 20, at Forest Lawn Cemetery conducted by Jonathan Floyd. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.

Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Miller of Roanoke; a stepdaughter, Eileen McAtee of Bangoe, Calif.; five sisters, Leona Floyd of Green Sea, S.C., Joan Schuetz of North Myrtle Beach, S.C., Dot King of Loris, S.C., Sue Callahan of High Point, and Edna Mae Livingston of Tabor City; and three grandchildren.

EVERGREEN -- Rosa Graham Williams, 88, died Sunday, May 20, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare.

Arrangements will be announced by Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville.

TABOR CITY -- Donnie Gause, 60, died Tuesday, May 15, 2007, at Sunbridge Nursing Home.

Final rites were held Saturday, May 19, at Holy Light Church in Tabor City with Elder John Williams Jr. officiating. Burial followed in Singing Union Cemetery, Tabor City. S&L Funeral Home of Fair Bluff handled the arrangements.

Survivors include his mother Katie Mae Vereen of Tabor City; a son, James Pelham Jr. of Johnstown, Pa.; a daughter, Renee Gause Edward of Forestville, Md.; five brothers, Charles Vereen Jr. of Elizabeth City; Franklyn Vereen of Danville, Va., Albert Vereen, Darrell Vereen and Marvin Vereen, all of Tabor City; two sisters, Betty Vereen of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Lee Ethel Vereen of Tabor City; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

CAROL MARIE MARTIN

TABOR CITY -- Carol Marie Martin, 67, died Tuesday, May 15, 2007, at Loris Healthcare. She was the widow of Harry Martin. Born in Milwaukee, Wis., she was the daughter of the late Raymond Don Irving and Elizabeth Marie Spotz Irving.

Final rites were held Friday, May 18, at Inman Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Roger Small. Burial followed in Cedar Creek Cemetery, Nichols, S.C. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.

Survivors include a daughter, Susan Martin of Tabor City; three sons, Harry Martin, Bruce Martin and David Martin, all of San Jose, Calif.; a brother, Gerald Irving of Milwaukee, Wisc.; and a grandson.
